Obtaining a college degree is necessary to validate ones aptitudes and abilities in the business world. I did not feel like I was particularly smarter after graduating but the degree opened doors that being smart with only a HS diploma couldn't. I graduated in my early 30s and got a 40% pay increase with the same employer whom I had worked for five years. They didn't want to lose me - but did six months later when I changed fields and received an additional 20% increase in pay.

As far as health programs are concerned, UAA appears to be following suit with other degree factory colleges and flooding the market. Many of last years graduating class still don't have jobs. If given the option don't go to UAA unless it's for Med Lab tech or Dental, otherwise, leave state, where the programs are much better. My personal experience at UAA was negative, very condescending teacher. When clinical time came around they weren't helpful at all, made almost 0 effort to keep track of students in facilities, and offered 0 support for any problems that arose, except disciplining or blaming students. Many of the facilities have a negative attitude toward students from UAA, whereas if you're coming from Oregon or Washington, it's not so bad.

The University of Alaska Anchorage is a diamond in the rough. It is a first rate University with 80% PHD professors that are accessable and helpful. Unlike at a big prestigious University where you will most likely be taught by a graduate student and never really get to know your professor, professors at UAA really take the time to get to know their students on both a professional and personal level. Students are the primary focus, they are taken seriously and their opinion is always taken into account at UAA. I am very happy to be a student at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
