 | Quite Bright | This college is truly one of a kind. The professors are always accessible and, if not, they will make time for you. Most of them know each student by name. The administration has somewhat open ears and does a very effective job of running the college. I have never found any "red-tape" when dealing with the administration here. The campus grounds and facilities are all immaculate and they are under rotating/non-stop maintenance. Overall, life for resident students here is laid-back and worry free outside of the academics, and you could go through all four years without ever really thinking of the outside world. I sometimes wish I wouldn't have to leave because everything is taken care of for me: The food service always has good food available daily from 7am - midnight, the housekeeping does a thorough job several times a week on all residence halls, and the 24hr campus police department has always been there if anything has gone wrong or I needed assistance. The only complaint I have about BSC is related to its social life. The social life at BSC (keeping in mind that I AM in a greek organization) IS extremely choked by the greek organizations as another reviewer put it. It's a great system but the parties get old after a while and the school doesn't sponsor too many popular weekend events. The neighborhood around the campus, or "outside the gate", is definitely somewhere you wouldn’t want to be at night, so expect to make frequent drives to Birmingham's "Southside"/Five Points night district if you want anything close to real night life. Also be aware that MOST people leave the campus on the weekend to go home, and it's very easy to be left here with nothing to do even if you have friends. Overall, I think BSC ranks up there with the best of the Southeast's liberal arts colleges and you (especially your parents) will not be disappointed with the education you get here. | Quite Bright | I have mixed feelings about Birmingham-Southern. My professors are great and I have made several good friends. It has been a wonderful place for me to grow in the last year and a half but it has some drawbacks. I came from another state and a much larger city not in the south and the social life here caught me way off guard. Please don't be discouraged from visiting and applying to BSC, but I strongly urge you to spend some time on the campus before you make your decision. I wish I had now. The social life on campus is very dull and most of the girls here are your typical totin', wearin', follow the pack, gossipy, sweet tea sippin' southern belles. Most are closeminded and can come across as snooty although I'll admit some can be the most sweet people you'll ever meet. The guys here are also extremely southern for the most part. I have heard more glass packs and muddin' trucks and seen more old-south paraphernalia than I really ever cared to see. To each his own ya know? ha. As it stands right now, the guy/girl ratio is to the girls' disadvantage. Students tend to be very cliquish and stay in their own little groups. Alot of people at this school also went to the same high school. To the contrary, if you look hard enough there are people here who don't fit the stereotype I gave but you'll have to be the judge of that. Just be careful when you choose a college because the faculty and administration can be great but its the students who make the school. | Bright | My advice: Visit the schools you are considering! I have one boy in his second year of college and one who will start next year. The one most important thing for them in making their selection was the college visit, especially the overnight-in-the-dorm type of visit that the smaller colleges usually offer. My older boy did a lot of reading about schools and picked out his top six. Then he visited. The school that he thought would be his top choice he HATED! The one he chose, which he really likes, he decided on by the next morning after his overnight stay. When I met him at the admissions office, he said, "This is where I want to spend the next four years of my life." I would say NOTHING compares to the visit in helping to make a choice. When the kids all gathered in the dorm room at night, they gave him the straight scoop on the college. This is something he couln't get from broshures, conversations with admissions officers, or conversations with "student ammbassadors", whose job is to represent the school.
