Not so bright
I enrolled in the University's "New College" interdisciplinary program. Its designed and marketed to students who are "self-motivated" and different. Basically, it was the program for anyone who was smart, weird, and liberal. We had seminars, not classes. It was awesome in its learning opportunities. Wonderful reading, discussions, people, etc. The New College secretary, Margarete, should have received an award for her friendliness and guidance. New College was small, and so I felt like I was attending a small, liberal, private university (ala Brown or Bryn Mawr). Its also very ecologically minded, progressive liberally, etc.
The problem is that New College WAAAYYYYY overhypes its "differentness" and "coolness". I have been hard pressed to find a good job after college. No one will hire an "interdisciplinary studies" major. At least no one in my field. I have spoken with others who graduated before me who attest to the same. We have pretty much all returned to grad school for something more "practical" so we can pay the bills.
That being said, I still feel like I learned VERY WELL in New College classes. And NC helped me stay tuned in to my other classes, which would have just been boring lecture crap without the interdisciplinary approach with which to integrate it all.
The campus isn't that beautiful. The Quad is nice, and thats about it. The rest of it looks like a dump.
Off campus is a dump unless your parents are paying for you to rent a nice box.
I lived on a party street, in a big CONDEMMED apartment house. Basically all the freaks got lived there, so that was cool. We had house parties and bands all the time, but our place was a DUMP. Serious. I won't be surprised if I get cancer from it years down the road.
Greek life RULES. Greek Frats bus kids to the polls on election day, pump them full of beer, and then tell them to vote conservatively.
If youre an art freak, or queer, or liberal, go someplace else. I was in the Women's Studies department and we were constantly being threatened with losing our funding because folks thought we turned "impressionable young girls" into lesbians. Well, yeah we had a few lesbians in the women's studies department, but so what? UA still supports institutionalized bigotry, and homophobia has taken the place of racism.
That being said, there were some really cool liberal professors in the religious studies dept. (Dr. Dody), AA studies (Dr. Shabaz), and WS (anyone of the TAs).
So anyway, if you're into INTERDISCIPLINARY studies, New College is great, but make sure you get something you can get a job with. And don't let them blow smoke up your ass.
Make your own scene. Hell, harass the Greeks - its very amusing.

My experience at Alabama was unique. If you aren't much of a partier, don't worry, you will find others who share your interests. But, on the other hand, most people who say they LOVE U of A, are the ones that party and don't really emphasize on the fact that Tuscaloosa isn't the best of areas. I lived in an apartment that was very nice, but less than 1/2 mile from the project housing-no joke. The Greek life does run the university, but most people do it to meet people and then lose interest. I've met a lot of great people, but decide that being on campus 4 hours a day vs. the rest of the time I spend worrying about my environment isn't worth it. I've decided to transfer. Football season is great though! I never liked football in general until I went there but the memories I made with my friends will stick forever!

As a Broadcast Journalism major and pre law student, I can say that attending the University of Alabama is the smartest decision I have ever made. The Broadcast program is in the top 5 nationally and the Law School (which includes pre-law) is ranked in the top 30 nationally. One of the biggest selling points about academics at Alabama is that rather than waiting two years and then applying to a college within the university for your major, you begin you major your freshman year. I cannot think of any other big name school that allows you to do this. It is great for Broadcast students because this means that you can using all the high end film equipment and editing software your first year and then go out and apply for an internship at CNN in Atlanta (2 1/2-3 hours away). Also, UA is one of only two schools in the country to have their own commercially owned news station. This means that they are a legitimate station in the market that competes with all the other stations. This station serves a large portion of the state of Alabama and is run by professionals and students alike. It is a tremendous learning experience for students. The campus is quite possibly the nicest in the country and the people are some of the nicest you will ever meet. I encourage you to look into the University of Alabama and strongly consider it. However, they are in the middle of a huge "boom" period (UGA went through one not long ago). The student population is being built up to a total of around 28,500-29,000 undergrads and then once that goal is reached, the university is capping admissions and will raise their admissions standards by a great amount. So right now it is relatively easy to get in but it will not be like that for long. All I can say is that Bama is simply a little piece of heaven on earth. Oh and btw, if you are liberal, don't worry. I too am a Democrat/Liberal and there is a very big number of leftists on campus and it is in no way a close minded conservative dominated place. Who would have thought you'd find a welcoming place for liberals in the deep south!? :P ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!

Greek life isn't essential to have a social life here, but I would admit that it is the easiest available conduit to new friends at the University. However, as all Freshmen now live in dorms, it shouldn't be too big of a problem to meet people in your dorm and make some lasting friendships. I came up here with about 25 high school mates and really only hang out with 1 or 2 of them still. However, I've got at least 3 really good friends from out of state, and at least 40 to 50 more that I've met in classes and activities. The University is accommodating with its availability of extra-curriculars and intramural sports activities. The campus is very aesthetically pleasing, in generally good shape, and the recreation center is second to none. There's nothing quite like Alabama Football in the fall, either. Even if you're not a fan, the experience should still be quite enthralling. As for the city of Tuscaloosa, there isn't a whole lot to do outside of drinking or going to a movie. T-Town doesn't have a particularly large amount of culture, and there aren't any great bars. There are tons of bars, but most of them are usually jam-packed, have really loud (often really bad) bands, are uncannily smoky, and serve all their drinks in clear plastic cups (I'm not a toddler, don't worry; I won't drop my little sippy cup!) I really think how one perceives the social scene depends a lot on how one spends time with friends. Bars can be fun, but friends are often much more so. All in all, Alabama's a good school that has great faculty members and academic programs (if you REALLY know what you're looking for) that provides a variety of opportunities that cover almost anything imaginable. Though some aspects of the Greek life may seem over-the-top or alienating, keep in mind that only 20% of the school is Greek...
