Do not listen to the negative reports! This is the best film and animation school in the West, if not the world. People call it the Juilliard of the West Coast, and there are people here who turned down USC, NYU, and Juilliard to attend Calarts. The film department has important people from the industry as instructors, and the animation dept is world famous. Plus, the industry connections and opportunities are first rate. Forget about waiting till your second or third year to begin studying in your area of interest- they immerse you into it immediately. I love it here, I feel like I am going to get the career I have always dreamed of.
Ignore the drunks and potsmokers, as they drop out soon enough...there are good sober hard working students here, but you have to look for them as they are usually off working on their next film, song, theatre production, cartoon, etc.

Oh CalArts. It's true that you've got to be pretty dedicated to make use of the Fine Arts program. It has almost NO structure to speak of, which is what some people want, but often not right out of high school. Photography and Graphic Design are more traditional, and probably better for most undergraduates. Graphic design is phenomenal, the faculty is award-winning and the coursework is tough but you will able to make a living once you get out and you will learn a lot.
The film school is pretty great for experimental work. And the character animation program continues to be solid.

CalArts has more in common with alternative colleges like Hampshire than it does with other art schools like MICA or RISD. The emphasis is on conceptual art rather than applied arts, so be ready to explain your work. In general the faculty have incredibly impressive resumes, a lot of them really are at the top of their respective fields. Sometimes it can be a little hard to believe that you actually have access to all of these people. They can be a little intimidating, but don't forget that they're here to help you.
The school has great programs in animation, film, photography and graphic design. I've heard the performing arts departments are not as strong for undergraduate, but you can get something out of them if you know exactly what you want.
Valencia is just a planned community; you can get basic necessities but for anything else you've got to make the trip out to Los Angeles. The small campus will get to you sometimes, but you can always find someone new and interesting to talk to. Students vary a lot from one department to the next, and there are stereotypes for all of them (theatre students are strange, dancers are ditzy, character animators never stop working etc.), that are often untrue. In short, there are many different types of people who came here for all sorts of reasons. Rules regarding drinking are fairly relaxed. In general you'll be left alone as long as you don't bother anyone.
Overall it's been an incredibly valuable experience.

The school is filled with creative, interesting, and engaging staff. It is required of professors at Calarts to be a currently working artist. They can be arrogant, but usually have earned some right. Still, this arrogance leads to amazing self discoveries and class discussions. This art school is NOT typical. It is highly conceptual and breaks ground constantly. As an art school it was everything I could have asked for, and yet there were areas with definite short comings.

Theft runs rampant on campus and you rarely get back anything that is stolen. Money, art supplies, and furniture can and will be taken. This is what happens when too many art students get together and try to convince themselves its some sort of commune. Another raging problem, a related problem, are students bitching about how poor they are after paying tuition. Perhaps this justifies their own stealing activities? Still, I will give them this: tuition is steep and you are paying as much for connections as you are for your education.

If you want a school that puts the responsibility of creating art on YOUR shoulders, but constantly challenges your personal discoveries then Calarts is the place for you. If you want THE MOST PROGRESSIVE STAFF AND STUDENTS then calarts is for you. If you want an amazing community of intelligent kids, and a crazy college experience, then yes...Calarts is for you. If, however, you feel you need a more structured and guided college experience you are best to look elsewhere. If you obsess over technical prowess, and can't stand modern art then Calarts may or may not be the place for you. It just depends how much you wish to challenge your own beliefs about art, and Calarts WILL do that.
