I graduated in 1998, so my memories of the school might differ from the reality of today, however I believe the school has a great program regardless. I learned leadership skills, maritime skills, and overall practical life-type skills. I don't remember much of my physics and pre-calc classes, but that's not what I went to CMA for. I learned about navigation, maritime law, and how to anchor and dock a ship. These are skills I still use today. Our student body was para-military and we had great camaraderie between us- we all worked together and helped each other out. We were shipmates. I remember being on the annual training cruise with all of my classmate buddies as an 18-year-old. We were standing on the fantail enjoying the evening air and being at sea, on our way cruising to Hawaii. I thought to myself- where else could I get an education like this? This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! I have never regretted it, I would go back again, and my career is where it is today because of the education and training I received there.

Not so bright
The school is terrible, especially the business program. THe school is also so small that there is nothing to do, and it is even worse the school is located in Vallejo. The business program is a complete mess. Teachers keep leaving or getting fired, and are replaced with teachers that should be teaching pre-school or lower. I would suggest that unless you want to sail boats your whole life, go to a real school. You will enjoy it more.

CMA provided an exceptional introduction to the sea-going life. In my 36 years of sailing I always prefer schoolship graduates as shipmates and have found Keema grads to be the best of those.
I am pleased that the focus of the school has changed to be more academic and less "trade school" in nature. I still feel, however, that the professional education is the school's natural niche.

Quite Bright
The California Maritime Academy is an amazing university to attend. The leadership development and total growth you will achieve is unattainable at another college. Class sizes are very small and professors are eager to help. Job placement has been 100% for the past 10 years straight. If you want a great education give the California Maritime Academy a visit.
