I find it humorous so many people have complained about the lack of emphasis Calpoly places on the humanities. Bottom line, it’s NOT a soft school; it’s a technical university that trains people to hit the job market running. When I graduated last year I had two job offers before I graduated, starting salary? 58k… If you want to spend 4 years debating the origins of feminism and taking a bunch of sociology classes go ahead… if on the other hand you want to know how a computer is manufactured, coded, and brought to market try Calpoly (but don’t complain).

Living on campus without a car my first year was really difficult. There is excellent public transportation, but I wasn't used to using public transportation, so I didn't and I felt like I was locked onto campus. I loved the school my first year, but not the people. It took me taking action and getting involved to realize that my kind of people did exist at this school You really have to get involved. It makes all the difference. Don't worry about the course load; you can always drop extracurriculars later if you need to.

Quite Bright
Cal Poly SLO is a great school... I'm a child development major and the program is awesome... I couldn't of asked for a better program... the worst part of SLO is easily the kids who attend cal poly... the guys here are mostly macho and/or douchebag pretty boys or hicks and the girls are mostly poly dollies (dumb, drunk girls who are looking for a nice dumb pretty boy or hick). The social life here is one small step above high school drama, with most people basing their personal life based on the trials and tribulations observed in the media a la brittney, lindsay, jamie lynn and the rest of them.. if you like watching reality tv shows revolving around romance then you'll enjoy SLO social.. The school is world class and there are amazing proffessors, and there are many cool students, but the overwhelming majority of the students are from the "popular click" in high school. The surrounding geography is amazing here in slo... so much hiking, biking, surfing, camping... it's amazing there aren't more people here than there are. But slo has already changed a great bit in the 4 years i've been here and it's turning more and more socal with every year. There's no diversity here, just white, white people. The weather is very nice, especially if you from northern california, where it rains much more... if you're other schools of choice are uc san diego, san diego state or ucsb, then cal poly will suit you well... if you're more of a santa cruz, sf state, humboldt person then i wouldn't recommend SLO because of the peoplle here. but cal poly, academically is one of the best bang for your buck schools you can find. oh yeah one more thing, everyone here drinks... all the way from college freshmen to the 60 year old residents, everyone drinks here.

Not so bright
this place is simply amazing. friends from high school are going to other cal states and for the same price i'm getting an education and college experience far superior. we are nationally known in so many academic programs and at half the cost of any UC.
