The school itself, the programs, academic work, etc. is very good. UCR is usually only mentioned in jokes but the courses are extremely challenging and I can't imagine them not being on par with the other UCs. However, Riverside the city is horrible. Most students leave for Los Angeles or Orange County when given the opportunity (about 45 minutes away.) It's hot and smoggy during the summer.

Super Brilliant
Riverside is not the most interesting town on earth. I do feel that the Philosophy department was very strong at UCR. I went on to a MA program at SFSU and felt that I learned much more during my undergrad days at UCR. The big problem is, of course, that one cannot do a whole lot with a Philosophy degree in general.

Quite Bright
Most students that I've met never actually directly applied to UCR but were referred by the other major UC's who didn't accept them. Most students commute to campus and there's a definite lack of school pride and unity. The campus, in it's current state, is a work in progress with neverending construction all over the place. The current administration is trying to make this a destination school 5-10 years from now at the cost of current students.Theft and car break-ins have become a problem in the last 6 months or so. Parking is ridiculous, most undergrad commuters can count on walking around a quarter mile before actually walking past a school building on their way to class This city of Riverside is entirely unappealing with very little to do and is consistently ranked with the worst air quality and pollution in the country.
