Bright
Before coming to UCSB I was not sure if i would like going away from L.A. I think now that it has been the best choice I have ever made so far. My experiences have been great and i'm talking about the classes I had,not the parties. I think Santa barbara is a school for everyone. It is a place where u find your true self. U have choices to make and that is the most interesting thing of all. You are surrounded by all kinds of people, it doesnt matter if they are bad because from every bad there is something good out of it and that is just evrywhere. What makes UCSB the best in my opinion is that it makes me feel safe and at home it is some kind of peace that i have never felt before. It all depends on what you want to do and your personality.I'm not so into the party scene, but that doesnt mean that once in a while i dont feel like going somewhere with friends. Everything can be done, just dont drink and drive. Dont drink and have sex. My idea of a good party is dancing, knowing what your doing and having unforgetable memories with friends. Since i just started I do recommend to come and visit,it is a great place to be at.

Quite Bright
This school has good and potentially bad aspects.
UCSB is set on bluffs surrounded by the sea. On any outer rim of campus you have views of the Pacific Ocean and beach, which can be taken advantage of all year. The weather gets cloudy in May and June and kind of cold in the winter but being for the northeast it always feels nice to me. The Campus is wonderfully maintained and is very beautiful. Not many of the buildings match as in traditional brick style collegiate atmospheres, but this is due to its rapid growth. When friends came to visit me from the east coast they could not believe that this is where I went to college.

UCSB is constantly expanding in terms of student housing and academic buildings. Through this increase in construction and the higher demand for admission UCSB continues to climb the school ranking lists, being ranked 44th in the nation, and 13th best public. While some may try to discredit the school due to its long and continued reputation as a wild party school, UCSB has many different programs each designed to give you a broad background in all aspects of your field of study while still getting a liberal arts education with the completion of your GE's. Most of the professors are top notch and some even award winning, you have the chance to be surrounded by many intelligent people in a beautiful, relaxed and fun atmosphere.

The partying, can be a good and bad thing. Parties in Isla Vista, which is the neighboring town to UCSB, is made up mostly of UCSB and SBCC students. When you put thousands of college kids in a small beach town you are bound to get parties. While the party scene is very big, if you really wanted to you could avoid it. There are many other things to do on campus and in the downtown area but partying is still the top choice for weekend activities. Many people get fed up with the party scene after freshman year and few leave because they want a school with less of a party atmosphere. As long as you have good time management you will be fine.

Overall, UCSB is one of the best places to go to school, with a great downtown, amazing college atmosphere, the beach, the weather, great academics and increasing scholastic reputation it does not get much better. I would not want to be anywhere else.

Not so bright
I am a first year english major. By fall of next year, I will have transferred to a small, liberal arts school. Here is my advice: if you are one of the students who looks at the negative comments on this page and says, "they seem like losers" or reason that the negative comments are in the minority and won't apply, then you will love it here. You will love it here if you want the Animal House experience. You will love it here if you don't care about your education and are looking for easy A's. It will be the best four years of your life you like lots of time to "chill" and "hang out." I came here because I had a stressful high school experience and said "fuck it, Santa Barbara seems like fun." My frustrations with this school, primarily the lack of drive and motivation in the students, fosters this hatred of young pleasure seeking people in the country. If you read Brave New World, this school is the end of the book where he gives up rebelling and accepts the orgae. It truly, deeply saddens me that this is considered, albeit towards the end of the list, one of the top 50 schools in the nation and the top 13th public school. Not to say there aren't good qualities about the school. The weather is gorgeous, but monotonous. The kids are friendly, although fucking idiots. I've had some AMAZING professors, but the kids just don't seem to care. If you want to waste your money on a mediocre education COME ONE COME ALL. There are two types of students here: ones that are "different" and hate it and every other blonde in uggs and mini skirts. I went back to L.A. one weekend a few months in and realized "omg fat and black people exist!" You wouldn't know that living here. I.V. sucks all of the creativity out of you.
