UCSB is one of the top national university that has an atmosphere for all types of people. Students are not cut-throat competitors here, yet our studies are our primary concern. But there is a tendency to let loose the anxieties of schoolwork by partying (not as much). The university has a beautiful setting by the beach and the community and students are mostly laid back. If anyone loves a mixture of good academic program with a wonderful social setting, this is the school to go to.

I love this school a lot. It was the best decision I have ever made. There is one thing you need to watch out for. People party a lot here. It's still a UC, meaning it is challenging, but there is always a party to go to. You need to balance school and fun.

Don't be afraid to get involved in campus activities beyond the parties and general roommate socializing. Looking back I wished I had stayed in the on-campus dorms rather than in off-campus dorms. I think there are a lot more opportunities to meet people and "get involved" in things if you are actually on campus. My office campus dorm was fun but I think I would have joined more activities and groups had I been in an on-campus dorm situation.
