| Average | UC Santa Cruz, the whitest out of all the UCS. Uneducated liberals abound, the richest kids out of all the UCs, UCSC is a boring place to go to school. Yeah you might be saying "I dont care about football or the typical college experience, I want something different!" No, you really dont. You wanna know why? Typical college experience= easy way to meet people, create fun events (not just football, for christ sake this school doesnt even have a center area where kids from the whole university can hang out) and just enjoy yourself. If youre a stinky pot loving uneducated hippie who wants to spend their 4 years stoned in the trees without really joining a campus atmosphere, then by all means....but for those who want to have a genuine time with people who enjoy different activities DONT COME HERE. | Campus Aesthetics: A+, Education Quality: F | | | |

Santa Cruz is a beautiful place. Really it is the typical college environment I would think, however, my experience here has been incomplete.
It seems to be like a puzzle that just does not fit together. I am sad here and I've tried a lot to get involved, but I've been hitting a brick wall.
Santa Cruz lacks a sense of community. Everyone seems to be on some path that cannot be intercepted by friendship. I feel many times that everyone has found their niche except me. Perhaps I am not outgoing enough, yet even when I try to foster relationships they seem to be left as mere acquaintances and nothing ever becomes of them. This may be because the school is so spread out that once you meet someone cool or interesting you may never see them again.
I love the beach, I love the forest, and I love the banana slugs. Classes can be large, but if you make yourself known you will be enticed by the professors and they encourage and like you to introduce yourself. People here are really awesome and open, however many times they are lacking a passion about life or their major. This openness can be faulty sometimes. For some reason, everything does not fit together and it distresses me because I believe this University has so much potential. This is just from my perspective and I am sure other students feel differently. I don't know, but I feel lost. I also think that there is no dialog between the administration and the students. Everyone is in their own world. There are not a lot of events that involve the whole University. The tree-sit is a representation of the oppressiveness and the lack of cohesiveness. I've decided to transfer and I am sad to leave the beauty, the warrior yoga, the Kresge food co-op, and the farm behind. But sometimes when things don't stick together, you've gotta move on. | Campus Maintenance: B+, Individual Value: F

I came to UCSC as a transfer student from New York City. Half way through my first quarter I realized that UCSC doesn't live up to the quality of education from my previous school. What a deception!
I would consider the campus to be one of the most beautiful in the country, the natural setting I mean. The only only building exterior I like is Oakes College.
You might find some good professors. I did find one, just one. For most part, I thought professors didn't teach science courses well. You better pay a graduate student to tutor you on the side if you want to get good grades. Coming from another school I had the privilege of knowing what a good professor is like. If you are the kind of student who gets impressed by a professor's ability to say a joke or be relaxed in class then fine. I come from NYC and I am used to old people being way more interesting that. I went to high school abroad, and most of my teachers had doctorate degrees in their field, so I am not all that impressed by professors just because of their PhD.
I found that the chemistry and biology departments aren't very helpful. It is almost like the school's staff are isolated from the rest of the world.
I see that many students here mention that UCSC will prepare you for graduate school. I'm not so sure about that, unless you're interested in pursuing a research field.
The town of Santa Cruz will bore you to death. Yeah, living by the beach is nice. If you can rent a place close to the beach. Nature is really the only positive thing about the town and UCSC.
The school makes very difficult for you to develop an independent major now, and the major offerings aren't very interesting, SJSU and SFSU have many more interesting options. I also found that many classes that are pre-requisite for majors are only offered once a year. I don't get that. If you mess up in that class and need to drop it of fail, you need to wait one whole academic year to take it again.
The school is very homogeneous, and lacked people from urban areas. Traveling around campus is very inconvenient because of the hilly terrain.
I guess UCSC is good for a student who is fed up with the real world, who wants to be very close to nature, and doesn't mind getting mediocre education. Oh, by the way. If you do decide to go to UCSC try to take the Human Genome class. The instructor is the best professor at the school. good luck | Campus Aesthetics: A+, Education Quality: F
