The engineering program has a "check box" type of curriculum. The instructors tend to cater to the slower students in the class and tests have even been modified to pass failing students. The senior classes were the worst. Just show up on day one and get a syllabus and instructions to build a project. Any project - just as long as the report is typed up at the end. There was no input or mentoring from the instructors. Even when asked directly for assistance emails were ignored and eventually became snooty in the responses.

The labs are extremelly outdated, dirty, disorganized and in need of a complete overhaul. The computers are slow, poorly managed and in various states of disrepair. It can take up to 15min to login and start working.

If you've ever attended a "real" college (pick any state university) then you will find the curiculum very easy. Most students are there because their employer is footing the bill and they couldn't care less what grade they get as long as they pass. Ninety percent of all tests are take home/open book, even the one or two exams that were in class were open books/notes. If you need a degree to check the box for work then this is the place to go, if your looking for an education you won't find it here.

Somewhat draconian in how they approach implenting new policy for instance had I known this is how they approach their students I would have definitely had second thoughts about applying (happy holidays indeed):

Re: New University Policy Regarding Class Participation

NEW POLICY

I am pleased to announce that Colorado Technical University is implementing a new policy on class participation and attendance effective February 8, 2006 (the start of the 0601B session). Complete details of this new policy will be sent to all students in the near future.

There are several changes I want to bring to everyone's attention a little early as it will impact your continuing enrollment in the university. The most important changes are:

* ALL students will now be required to attend class DURING THE FIRST WEEK (first seven days) of the session or you will be withdrawn from the university.

This is a positive change that will encourage everyone to get started in class early. I'm sure all of you know that the quicker you get started on assignments and coursework, the easier it will be to get involved in class activities and have a greater understanding of the course content.

* AFTER THE FIRST WEEK of classes (7 days), if you do not participate at least once every 15 days you will be withdrawn from the university.

I know no one wants this to occur since it will only delay your graduation date. Everyone wants to graduate on time! So with this new policy it will be important to continue participating in class on a regular basis.

My suggestion for this coming January session is that everyone begin practicing this new attendance policy and attend class during the January 1 to January 7 week!

Please remember that for the February session though EVERYONE will need to be in class the first week of school.

Thanks everyone and I certainly want to wish you all Happy Holidays!
