My background- I have an AAS is in physical science. I have two BS degrees, one in Scientific Technical Communication, and the second in Geology. These were earned at a traditional university in Michigan. I am a member of two honors societies, and have been published in professional journals. I am a retired soldier, a veteran of four wars, and a life member of Disabled American Veterans. Intending to pursue a second career, I sought an online university that would not interfere with work, while achieving an MS degree.
Colorado Technical University Online (CTU) was the institution I selected. My experience at CTU is discouraging. Grading is not consistent. What may result in a 10% deduction one week, may be a 0% deduction the next week, and a 15% deduction the week after. Consistent grading is necessary for effective learning, and is a hallmark of professionalism in academics. A second concern regarding CTU is their grade appeal policy. When you can demonstrate that your grading was not conducted consistently, the grade appeal policy threatens you with a grade reduction when you appeal a grade. Many students who believe that their grades were inaccurate, are intimidated by the grade reduction threat. I can ensure you that this intimidation in academics is very real; that CTU does reduce grades when you appeal the grades given. One final concern regarding CTU is that they do not have a GRE requirement. If you are well educated, you will find yourself reviewing the work of other students who cannot write their way out of a paper-sack. You will wonder how these students are passing the assignments while your work is being gigged for instructor opinions, and conjecture. While I maintain a GPA of 3.5 at CTU, I believe the quality of the other students graduating will eliminate the value of having a degree from CTU. Whether you are deciding on your first AAS, BA/BS, or an MS degree, if you have any other option in the world for an academic institution of higher learning, I recommend you take it, and avoid CTU. | | Feb 24 2009 | Business - Management and Administration

Before starting at CTU, I had attended a community college before attaining an AAB and BSM at Baker University in Kansas a brick morter university. I also took a few online courses there. I also took some elective courses at a brick and morter location with the Univesity of Phoenix. Having given my backgound of schools and comparing it to CTU, I can honestly say CTU is the best school experience I've had and I other than the community college, I enjoyed my other experiences. Here are the things I love about CTU online, #1 thier technology is user friendly and top notch. We have weekly web chats where the professor speaks and the studends (10-18 generally) can type in questions in an IM type of setting. It allows the instructor to answer our questions real time without being interrupted. You're not required to attend live and can go back and listen to the chats as they archived. I have not found another school (I've looked at dozens) that offers this type of technology.
My instructors have all been tough but fair and aptly qualified in the field they are teaching in. All have been helpful and available via IM, phone, and email. The textbooks are included with tuition and they say some text books are online (which I hate) but so far with only 4 courses to go, all of my text books have been hardback and are mailed to me about a week before the course begins.
My hesitation to attending CTU is that they are a for profit university so I worried it would be a degree mill and that they would more money at every turn. I can honestly say that I experienced that at the other schools more so than CTU. In fact, CTU has delivered exactly as promised. And anyone who believes that all universitys aren't a "business" is kidding themselves. I am considering obtainging a second Masters in Dispute Resolution with CTU. As with any school there are downsides. It is expensive. They don't have the prestige of other schools. I've not had been impressed with thier technical support on the few occasions I have run into trouble, they are available 24/7 on IM, just generally don't seem to know much. We also have group projects which I enjoy but it's a mixed bag as it seems every project has 6 or 7 people assigned to it and 2 don't participate. I've expereinced that at Baker University but when you're in person it's a little easier to coordinate and overcome. Overall my experience has been a great one and I encourage anyone looking at an online university to consider CTU. Other than being a student, I'm not affiliated with the school and I've read dozens of negative comments about CTU so wanted to share my own experience. If anyone has any specific questons, please feel free to email at my personal account (hope I don't regret giving this out) davidrguy@yahoo.com Whatever your path...good luck! | | Jan 09 2009 | Business - Management and Administration
