The town and surroundng area are nice for about a week. The faculty are nice and helpful but the facilities are very bad and maintenance are horrible. The general population are just hippies and smoke pot the majority of the time. The campus police take their job way too seriously and will ticket you for the most minor things. The food here is horrible, many of my friends have gotten food poisoning and one had to go to the ER. The social life is not happening and if you want to have a good college experinece Do NOT come here!

When I first visited fort lewis I was taken away from the surrounding beauty of durango and the mountains that surround the campus. But after the first week the honeymoon was over and reality hit. The students are extremely unfriendly when I say hello to someone walking to class the just look down and keep walking like your a leper. If you're not the next survivor man or the next dennis kucinich don't bother attending because while some of the students might be the majority are just arrogant outdooor hippies who criticize you when you dress like a upstanding citizen or try to debate their opinion about how socialism is the best form of government. It seemed that they let anyone in as long as they owned a pair of chacos and a hemp hoodie.

Then their was the issue of nightlife, my entire high school went harder people were amazed when they hear you drank on a school night. Futhermore there are no places to rage if you're a freshman living in the rundown cramped dorms because everyone lives down the hill and this GDI infested college has no greek life and thus no parties or attractive women for that matter. The students all seem to be trying to keep up with cu by smoking a copious amounts of weed and flaunting it like it was freshman year of high school again. I get bro you smoke weed nobody wants to sign your petition or listen to the dead. They only way this place becomes a respectful institution is if it stops giving indians a free ride and become a private school to incourage a educated student body.

Not so bright
Unless you qualify for the tuition waiver don't waste your time at Fort Lewis. Whatever you can study at the college and do in and around Durango you can do somewhere else and with more options available to you as well. The cost of living is almost certainly cheaper anywhere else than in Durango as well. (The average cost for rent is between 1500 and 1800 dollars a month and not even for a really nice place)Living on campus isn't cheap nor is it nice enough to pay for either. What Fort Lewis considers a "nice" dorm-and therefore costs extra-is a standard room at most other colleges while the other dorm rooms are outdated military barracks. As far as faculty goes I have had no real problem with the majority of my professors, like any other college there is good and bad, I have had some really great professors as well as some shitty ones though as a whole I would say that the faculty is a good one. It is a whole other story when it comes to the administration however, especially when it comes to how money is spent. (One of the schools' biggest problems is with the native American tuition waiver that the college offers to students who qualify. It is not a financially responsible agreement as it currently exists and the school refuses to modify it any way which might alleviate costs)
