I went to AU from 1986 to 1990 so awhile ago. I would say the school is decent but the value compared to a good state school is pretty bad. In addition if the career counseling has not improved since I was there, then I would strongly recommend against going here. Its biggest weakness was that the faculty advisor did not advise and the career center did not actively engage students to let them know the best way in which to break into a career. Fortunately for me, while attending grade school elsewhere I had a professor who was a fabulous advisor and provided great insights.

DO NOT ATTEND! If I could choose a college all over again, I would not even apply to American University. The professors are unhelpful, arrogant, and self-absorbed. The administration is cheap and will do anything to save money. They have recently combined the registrar's office and 2 other offices to create "AU Central", which is an excuse to spend less money.

The worst part of AU is that when I was accepted, I received a $12,000/year grant. As soon as I accepted, the financial aid office came up with some stupid excuse to take away ALL of my scholarship. I am not the only one that this has happened to. I know at least 2 others who went through the same thing!I am a music major and the music departmant is just as unless as the rest of the school. They try to make it seem like their faculty is superior, but in truth, they are musicians more concerned with promoting themselves than teaching their students.
