Ive been going to FSCJ (Florida State College of Jacksonville , was FCCJ) off and on for a few years (while working, and full time semesters) trying to figure out a major. I've taken a good mix of art and science classes (along with the normal english, psych, etc).

The Good:
The Biotech program is great (lead by Dr. Pegg) and has several new pieces of equipment to use in the many lab courses thanks to the $4 million he received for writing grants last year.

The art professors I've had are very creative people who have showed pieces of their own around the country (and world). Very helpful and encouraging while helping to hone your art skills.

The Bad:
It's a community(now state)college that does offer a few bachelor's programs. Not every professor is qualified to teach courses that will correctly prepare you for the field work (or so I feel). A lot of the classes are easy to get through if you actually do the work (not very challenging and very few if any rewards for exceeding).

The Ugly:
FSCJ has several campuses in Duval County/Jacksonville. Jacksonville is HUGE and at times VERY frustrating to drive in (I've been in Atlanta and this is worse). I've lived here or nearby for over 20 years (born and raised) and it's only gotten worse. Because the campuses are in separate areas (Beaches, Riverside, Downtown, Northside, etc) and each campus focuses on different areas (Beaches=Art, Downtown=Science, etc) taking a variety of courses can be trying (especially going to/from classes at different campuses).

DO THIS:
Plan your schedule early and try to get classes at the same campus or at least on the same day.

FCCJ is a great local college for students who want personal attention. The professors are very up to date in their subjects and help you with anything from personal advice to applying for financial aid. The school prepares students for advanced study and career training. My major issue is the lack of administrative and higher up support. The "academic advisors" are BS- I could find more information myself than they could in a week. Great resources are in the libraries with tutors and great librarians. Overall, a very nice campus.

The teachers are great, the rest of the staff (like the councellors and business office staff) are all really incompetant. They lose paperwork, make several filing errors, end up delaying students' FAFSA monies. They are too busy acting self-important to care.

A few of the online professors are non responsive and unhelpful. Main negative point is that the course work and course objectives are not clear at all. I am an A/B student and because of the lack of details for one course, I received an F. This was a very simple business course; each online test I received an A - so not really clear on why I was given an F in the course. The administration can not give me a clear answer and of course the professor will not return my calls or emails... $280 bucks down the drain!
