If you live in-state, by all means apply. The tuition is cheap and their financial aid is more than generous if your grades are decent. The school is so large and the population is so diverse that you're bound to find someone that catches your eye, despite the prevalent trends. The problem lies in the fact that it's hard to make friends. Although most people are approachable, no one seems willing to interact or go beyond "acquaintance" status. I'm sure there are many creative and interesting people out there, but how you reach them is beyond me.
If you're interested in the frat/sorority scene I hear it's differant than at most schools. However, they're loud and annoying enough that their presence is known. It seems fairly easy to get into them: a lot of creepy chicks from my highschool were able to do so.
The education itself is OK. If you were interested enough you could research the teacher and find some information on them before you take the courses, making class interesting or slack. The sad part is that most kids opt for the latter. The art, english and history programs seem weak, although I'm not the best judge of that. The business program is good, although cluttered with seemingly naive and greedy people.

FIU was not my first choice school, and frankly I ended up there as a result of sheer stupidity when choosing between Universities.
Academically, the coursework for Fresh/Soph is about the same as any other State school in Florida. Professors are either amazing or just about pitiful, a great many have heavy foreign accents.
FIU is still a commuter school serving the Miami/Broward area, so housing students should not expect to see many people on campus on weekends.

My advice for Housing students would be to appreciate the city of Miami, and go and enjoy yourself on weekends. FIU's dull campus life makes up for the amazing city life you get in Miami. The University of Florida on the other hand does not have much to do in terms of city life.

There's a problem with student services. The Bulsar's office and Financial Aid, and other student services are a disaster. The people working there are rude and the paperwork gets missplaced often.

HOWEVER, professors are wonderful human beings, very approachable, and know extremelly well the subject they are teaching.

I give FIU an A in academic Quality
an A in the quality opf professors
an A in the city life

However, be aware that the school is mostly a commuter University, so after classes if yo want to have fun, you have to find it in the surrounding city, but thankfully Miami is a busy and fun place, so there's plenty to do.

However, when it comes to the Student Services, FIU gets a C- due to unhelpful employees manning the Financial Aid and other student service offices. Overall though, i would do it all over again, providing they hire some new employees for those offices.

Great School!!!!!

Super Brilliant
Some FIU professors are good. Some are bad/old and need to retire. Most are difficult and impossible to find on campus; particularly those who have worked at FIU for 20+ years. But it's not the professors you need to be careful of.

Watch out for the Offices of Admissions, Registrar's and Financial Aid. They have and will lose your paperwork, your grades, your transcripts, your applications - and then blame you for "not handing the paperwork in". At all costs - always keep a photocopy and mark the date, time and person whom you handed your paperwork into. This is where FIU loses its student support. All the alumni I know refuse to give money to FIU because of some screw-up in Admissions, Registrars or Financial Aid. Even FIU faculty and staff know these offices are beyond any salvation. You can't reform them; FIU's better off starting from scratch. Honestly, you get better service from a more established university that recognizes the importance of customer service.
