After transferring from another state university after my freshman year, I have been a Biology/Pre-Med student at Mercer University for two years now. I feel that the University is wonderful and the teachers are very helpful. You get the opportunity to form very close relationships to your professors that are very hard to find at other larger institutions. However, before applying to this University, one must consider just how much they are willing to work. The biology/pre-med program at this school is incredibly difficult and VERY competitive. No exaggeration whatsoever. The teachers here expect nothing but the best. If you are not willing to pull all-nighters often or do not take well to frequent stress, I suggest that you do not attempt this major here. If you are hardworking and have the desire to be challenged, on the other hand, you will get your money's worth. "Survival of the fittest" takes on a whole new meaning with this major. I took science classes at a state university my freshman year and practically floated through - - - At Mercer, it was a completely different story. I have done well here only with a large amount of sacrifice and a nothing-but-school lifestyle. The academics here are incomparable to those of state universities.

Mercer University is a good place overall. It is expensive, so be sure you want to spend your money here and don't waste it buy being lazy or by just barely getting buy in classes. A lot of financial aid is given out to students-you just have to go after it. If you don't get enough offered to you at first, then let your admissions officer know. Often, they can magically find more funds to add to your scholarship, or increase your scholarship.

The athletics program here is not that well promoted. In the long run, your experience in classes and GPA matter more than going to a nationally-known football school. There is talk of getting a football team for Mercer again, but this is several years away. Other programs, like basketball and soccer, are good. The school could do a better job promoting them, but the focus here is more on academics, not athletics.

Certain departments are better than others as far as the major's curriculum, and often you really do get out of them what you put in. Sometimes departments don't require certain classes that a specific grad school may want you to have under your belt, so try to know what specific classes grad schools want when choosing a major and your classes within your major. Some departments are more research-focused than others, as in, they try to make researchers out of you (Psychology, Chemistry, Biology, etc). Others are more hands-on, and experienced based (Education, Engineering, Music, etc.) This is partly due to the nature of each major and what you can do with it at a Bachelor's level versus going on to a Master's or Doctorate level.

PREMED, Prepharm, etc., is HARD here. Accept it. Chemistry and Biology are challenging classes here.

Mercer University is Teaching University, so faculty do only a minimal amount of their own research. This is the place to go if you want personal attention and a close working relationship with professors and advisers.

Super Brilliant
I am a (pre-med) biology major. DON'T come here if you check anything else but "white" on the admission application. It's true that Mercer takes anyone. I hear crap about how people like to eat the things they kill and how killing poor people is better for society and the environment (the teacher was smiling when a male student stated this in class). Lots of faculty are prejudiced, and works hard to keep students from graduating. The dept. chair was my first advisor but she couldn't answer any questions nor help me outside of class. Turns out she favors athletes and butt-kissers. Sadly, I transferred here but I hope I get what I came here for and I thought that was an education. DON'T WASTE UR time applying to Mercer. An extra tip: less than 9% of Mercer alumni give back to their schools, and the professionals often have out of service numbers.
