The campus is in a dull town full of rednecks and white supremacist. The campus is predominately made up of caucasian in your face conservative christians who believe it's either their way or no way. There is little to no normal college party scene on campus, probably because all dorms have a midnight curfew, in the surrounding area it is not hard to find drugs such as meth and cocaine as well as many other sketchy things at off campus parties. The campus police are useless, they care more about giving out parking tickets than going after the real crimes that happen on campus such as rapes and illicit drug abuse. The majority of the students here are far from normal, they hold radical views and see themselves as holier than thou. The professors are often useless and egotistical, the only way to pass any opinionated essay in the english or philosophy classes are to write it in a manner to please the professor's opinion. The school will merely see you as a statistic that they can take money from in anyway possible whether it be falsely claiming you filled out a form wrong and fining you or giving you a ticket for parking in a parking spot incorrectly. When it comes down to it if you have any self respect do not come here or else you will hate your life. The school covers it up, but the suicide rate for students here is extremely high which really shouldn't be a surprise considering how awful of an environment it is to live on campus here. The Military Science Department staff are rude, especially the assistant commandant's secretary. The supply staff can't stick to their posted hours to save their life. The residence halls that the cadets are required to stay in are poorly built; less than five years old and they look like they are fifteen. The dining hall (Chow) closes at 8pm on weekdays. So if you are on the expensive meal plan, that is required if you are part of the corps, then you are SOL. This school has a parking services staff that pays for itself in the amount of tickets it gives out. Now North Georgia has some nice points, if you can get away from the Corps. You can't beat the view of Dahlonega and the mountains that surround it. The AT is right on-top of you and Hellen is a short drive away. The teachers and chow hall staff are nice and welcoming. I have never been one to go out and party, so the lack of entertainment opportunities in the surrounding town was not an issue for me. I also was not interested in joining a sorority or any other extracurricular activity, so I cannot give advice in that regards. I posted this critique specifically to talk about the downfalls of the advisement, financial aid, and education departments. Firstly, I entered college having earned credit for an intro history class through AP credit. For three and a half years, my advisers checked me off on my area A requirements. When I entered the education program I submitted my plan of study with no problems.It was not until the beginning of my last semester here that I was informed through the registrars office that my area A requirements had, in fact, not been met as the AP credit I had earned did not meet state requirements for graduation. This is a common problem that has been encountered in some form or another by more than a dozen students that I personally know - and, I am sure, countless students that I do not know. Secondly, at the beginning of every semester your student account shows a summary of your account balances for the term. This semester I had an account balance of roughly $500 after my HOPE scholarship. I paid the $500 and my account was settled. More than one month into the semester, I received an email saying that I was in danger of being expelled from the university for non-payment. It turns out, the financial aid office over-estimated the amount that the HOPE scholarship would be paying towards my tuition. I was not informed of this until I was put on the withdrawl list. Thankfully, I have supportive parents that were willing to pay over $1,000 on such short notice. Otherwise, there is no way I would have been able to pull together that much money on such short notice.Lastly, the education program at North Georgia has so many flaws that the prestige of the program (though great) is often overshadowed. I cannot tell you how many times we were told "Make sure that your students understand you care about them. The only way for students to truly learn is if they feel safe and cared for by you." However, the education program at North Georgia does exactly the opposite of that! We are constantly over-loaded with assignments and projects that have little to nothing in common with what we actually do in the classroom. In your student teaching itself, you are required to complete a teacher work sample that has about 15 steps that I can say (having been in placement classroom for 2 years now) NO TEACHER DOES. It is ridiculous, time-consuming, and - added to teaching full time as an intern - needless. Collaboration/Competitive: A, Useful Schoolwork: F Have a Question?
