I am a junior, majoring in both FibersQuite BrightArt & Design Department
I am a junior, majoring in both Fibers and Historic Preservation. My experience at SCAD has been largely positive. The city and the surrounding coast is beautiful, and there is lots to do on the weekends; college events, lectures, film festivals, the beach. There are seasons that are slower than others, but overall I am very happy with the activities the college offers. The educational quality generally improves when you get into your major courses, some of my foundation professors were great people and very talented, but lacked when it came to actual instruction. As I have moved into more specialized areas of study, the work has become increasingly refined and challenging. I can't say enough about how great the Fibers department is--the majority of the professors all are graduates of Cranbrook, and they are relaxed and open to more challenging and different work, whether it is fine art or industry-oriented. I consider the small department to be a sort of "womb", where the student is nurtured, pushed, and challenged--but not to any extreme. The department also has small, but realtively good facilities, with a Jacquard AVL loom, a screenprinting lab (which could be improved), and a host of floor looms. The only thing lacking is a papermaking lab, which is being worked on.As for Historic Preservation, the course work can leave a little to be desired--it has not been consistently challenging and the grading standards are too easy. Some of the professors are not very good teachers; they are smart but not focused. However, the hands-on education has been good so far. Though the academic standards are too loose and relaxed, the environment in general is very supportive and fun.
