University of Iowa, founded in 1847, is a public, comprehensive
institution. Its 1,900-acre campus is located on the Iowa River
in Iowa City, 24 miles from Cedar Rapids. The University
of Iowa is a major national research university with a
broad-based liberal arts foundation. Established in 1847 as Iowa's first public institution of higher education, it has won international
recognition for its wealth of achievements in the arts, sciences,
and humanities. Iowa is home to the world-renowned Writer's
Workshop, International Writing Program, and the Playwright's Workshop. The
University is composed of eleven colleges: Liberal Arts and
Sciences, Business, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Education, Dentistry, Medicine, Law, Public
