ISU is a non-traditional University.BrightCommunications
ISU is a non-traditional University. If you are looking for the "College Experience" you should consider other options. I think that my department (Mass Communications/ Journalism) is doing its best to overcome the current state of the economy, but there are some things that are tight. The previous University President made some unwise choices in the finances department that has left the University's "rainy day fund" considerably less than all of the other public universities in the state. One major pro for Idaho... its cheap to live here.

I know some graduates from my department that have come back to visit. They are doing well in their field & feel that they were trained to be competitive in the job market. We recently completed a new TV studio that is state of the art. I believe it was touted as the "most state-of-the-art" studio this side of the Rocky Mountains. I think this is in terms of Universities... but I don't know for sure. We combined finances with grants & the local public broadcasting station to build one kick ass studio. I think that if ISU was in a different town (Pocatello doesn't have much to offer, especially in careers after school) it would earn better ratings. There hasn't been much that has really angered me, but at this point I'm just ready to move on.

Question
After reading a lot of the reviews IEnglish
After reading a lot of the reviews I felt I should comment. First off, a lot of the reviews, while accurate, aren't very objective. I would like to share my experience. This school is less like a University and more like an extension of high school. This goes for everything from the students to the administration. There are a few good professors, although for the life of me I can't understand how they ended up here. I have even had a one that left because he was fed up with the school's lack of support for his program and efforts. I feel bad for the few good professors here that really try only to be stonewalled by students whom refuse to participate. They treat it like high school. When questions are asked, no one answers. I would be the first to admit, I am a lazy student outside of the classroom. Always have been. My time is for me, not homework. I'm one of those lazy, high IQ people. But the level of participation from students is appalling. The way the school is run is pathetic as well. You should research the president, Arthur Vailas. The faculty has voted no confidence in him more than once and the student have tried to get rid of him as well all to no avail. He wants this school to be the "MIT of the West" but all he has done is run it further into the ground. He is incompetent and it just trickles down from there. I worked there the entire time I studied there and still cannot get a job even for the department I just worked for! And this is with the recommendation of everyone of the interviewers. Now I am seeking to get a master's from a legitimate University. For your own sake, do not go to this "University". I for one wish I could get my time and money back. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions.

Question
ISU overall was a good school.Quite BrightSociology
ISU overall was a good school. I have to agree with most of the posts that it has a lot of downfalls but it did have a lot of good things about it. It is building a new campus and getting rid of some of its older 70's building in the process. It trys to capture school spirit but as a non-traditional school this is hard to do. It is rated one of the top nursing programs in the nation and has a great pharma program. It is opening Idaho's only med school in a few years that will be run out of the universities hospital. The town on the other hand is bad. They hate the school and could care less about its sports, students, or any thing ISU related even though it is the largest employer. So if you know where your headed and don't mind just going to a good school without alot of partying and the traditional college scene. ISU is an option. P.S. stear clear of the Sociological dept. not worth the time.
