My overall experience at the U of I was pretty intellectually stimulating. I grew to be more independent and mature. If you're from the city you might find it to be a little boring here if you don't join any clubs or participate in their activities. But I guess since there's not much to do here you get to spend more time concentrating on your studies.
Before you register for classes, I would recommend you check out ratemyprofessors.com, as it helped me out quite a bit. Some of the great professors I've had were: Prof. Dale Bauer(funny and made class interesting), Prof. Courtemanche(nice and smart), Prof. Pollock, and Prof. Mark C. Thompson. All were great professors in the English department who made class interesting and fun for me.
Here's a list of the pros and cons of the U of IL:
Good: beautiful campus, big and resourceful libraries, convenient transportation, nice gyms, and intellectual faculty.
Bad: noise levels at night from drunken students, ignorant suburban kids, boring.
Lectures: 300-500
Classrooms: 30-40 Most lectures are taught by professors then there will be TAs who separate the lectures into groups of 30-40 people to teach. If I had the choice to restart my college career I would choose the U of IL again but would've joined clubs so it wouldn't be so boring. Also, get your recommendations early and try to stand out in class before it's too late. | Preparedness: C, Reputation: B-

| Bright | I love UofI. It wasn't my first choice school, but I'm so glad I came here. The education is pretty good, and definitely worth the money if your instate. The classes can be hit or miss. I'm a Gender and Women's Studies Major, and though the GWS classes aren't terribly challenging (for me), they are always interesting and enjoyable. I particularly love my program. If your looking into Gender and Womens Studies, this is a GREAT program. The people are extremely helpful and friendly. I don't know anyone in the GWS program that is at all judgmental or unkind. The professors are intelligent and informed. This is a research institution, so the prof's here know what they are talking about and enjoy their fields. Of course, for some classes, this also means that prof's aren't that concerned with the classes and students. I haven't had any terrible experiences with prof's yet, but there are some that are just there for research and aren't very good, or into, the teaching aspect. All in all, I think I'm getting a pretty good education. As far as other majors go, my bf's a computer engineer, and he works hard. The program is one of the best in the country, so it's hard work. I think it's kinda tough to keep a high GPA for them. As far as English majors go, I've been disappointed at the intelligence level of some English students. Some can;t write or edit papers to save their lives! I have never taken an English course, so I dont know if that is the program here, or just a few unintelligent students. As far as social life goes, you're sure to find something that fits your taste with a student body of 35,000. UofI does have one of the largest Greek societies in the U.S., and its visible, but it doesn't really feel like the school is overrun with it. If thats what your into, then there are a huge variety of frats and sororities to pick from! If it isn't, don't worry, your in good company. The majority of students don't join a Greek society and don't center their nightlife around it. The nightlife on campus is pretty good. There is a strip on campus of good restaurants, bars, and some shops. Off campus, in downtown, the bars get better, but some are 21 and up only; whereas campus bars aren't hard to get alcohol at. As with most campuses, drinking is the main past time, so if you dont drink, like my bf, nightlife is limited. Ther e is a plethora of student orgs though. You can find just about everything, and if you can't find something that fits your mood, than you can pretty much create something overnight. The facilities are pretty good on campus. Some buildings are kind of falling apart, but most are going through renovations now, and there are like 6 new buildings going up. The campus is quite large, so I hope you like walking. We do have a pretty wonderful bus system though, which will take you just about everywhere on campus and through the city. It's all free to students too. The dorms on campus varies. Nothing is very wonderful; some dorms are rather small and old. I lived in LAR, an all girls dorm. It wasn't the most entertaining place, but that didnt prove to be a problem for me, especially as it is connected to the Art kids' dorm. Most students get apartments after freshman year. The apartments vary as well. There are tons and tons of apartment buildings, so you have plenty to pick from. Just as an example, I live in a fairly nice (meaning clean and well sized, not crawling with bugs, but also not with a jacuzzi or anything) apartment with a good location, and it costs me $380 a month for rent. As far as other community life goes, there is an active LGBT community. There are always plays and events being put on to inform and assist for the LGBT community. There is def a good number of gay students. I know about 10 gay men and 3 lesbians, but my circle isn't huge. I'm not sure how the LGBT dating scene is, but there is a gay bar and nightclub here. It's also very straight friendly, which is good since it's one of the best places to dance! All in all, I would recommend UofI to just about anyone. There is a lot to offer here. The education is pretty well worth it, but you only get out of it what you put in, as with any education. Socially, there is something here for everyone and it's not hard to meet people. Most people are pretty friendly. I've only had a few bad experiences. Overall, I give it an A. | Education Quality: A+, Perceived Campus Safety: B | | | |

The University of Illinois at Champaign is a good school as long as you are in the right department. The engineering school is one of the best in the country, along with the school of business. If you are in either of these fields, and you want a public university, this is where you need to be.
The campus is probably one of the best looking campuses in the US. The landscape and architecture are awesome. I looked at other engineering schools like UM-Rolla, and the campuses there were boring as heck. This campus is great. I guess the other reviewers have only walked a block off campus if they say there is nothing to do. As long as you have a car, you can get to a number of shopping and other complexes. Champaign/Urbana has a population of about 120,000 without the 40,000 students at U of I, so there is plenty to do.
If you choose one of the good programs at U of I, be ready for a challenge. I coasted through high school but U of I is a lot tougher. I really have to work to maintain a good GPA. Don't come here expecting a community college difficulty. One of the few problems I have is foreign profs that don't speak english very well. I didn't do so hot in calc last semester because my prof was chinese and so was my TA. It's hard to learn calc when you can barely understand your teacher. The TA situation is hit or miss. I have had some wonderful TAs who were very helpful in the class, and I have had some TA's who have no clue what they are doing. Thats the problem with Grad Students teaching a subject.
I wouldn't suggest coming to U of I unless you are going to be in Engineering, Business, Architecture or a science like Biology or Physics. Most of the other majors would be just a waste of money. You can go somewhere a lot better for a lot less money to do Speech Comm or English. The other majors have a good reputation. If you want to do Business at U of I, you might think about doing community college for your gen eds because you can't start business classes until your junior year anyway. So you might as well save some money and get an associates degree in the process. Even though I'm still an undergrad, I know grad students here at U of I who really like the programs. U of I has good engineering, business, law, and chem grad schools. The engineering and law schools are both top 10 for public grad schools. Overall, I really like the University of Illinois. I know some people from New York might not like the simplicity of Illinois, but it's a really good school. I moved to Illinois from Phoenix, AZ, which has a population of 5 million people, a few years ago and it takes some time to adjust to the corn and soybean fields, but you get used to it. There is still a lot of things to do here and a lot of partying if you are into that kind of stuff. The University of Illinois is a good school for those going into the right majors and are willing to put in some effort and hard work. | Education Quality: A, Useful Schoolwork: C

| Quite Bright | I rarely saw a professor and the TAs were not qualified to teach. There was rampant cheating on campus. The majority of the social aspect involved the Greek system and the bars; and, if one was not interested in either, one was an outsider without much of a social life on campus. The university is so highly overrated, most likely due to all the research that the professors do, not the teaching that they do. | Campus Aesthetics: B+, Faculty Accessibility: D- | | | |
