Not so bright
Its funny that this survey ask what type of student I was, but I put "not very bright" because this school makes me feel like that quite a bit. That's the way I feel in comparison to some of the students here. If I were at home in Chicago in my neighborhood I would have probably been nicer to myself. There are so many smart people here that it's hard to see yourself as bright even if you really are. Especially considering how well I did in high school. I went from 3.7 in HS to 2.7 in college. Its quite depressing sometimes, but Im a senior now and I made it through. I haven't achieve as much as I wish I would have, but I made it this far and Im still proud of myself for sticking it out and not giving up. That's the spirit you have to have when you come here. When its all over you appreciate your education so much more than you would have if it was easy.Ok now lets talk about campus life...My experience represents that of a minority student or African-American student FYI. The school is quite segregated. Its not segregated legally or anything, its just the environment and people segregate themselves due to...who knows what exactly. No one will openly admit to the segregation personally, it just kind of lingers just below the surface. I have very few friends that are not black. However, this may also be a benefit bc the people you are friends with are pretty cool and fun to hang out with. Sometimes I feel like the school is black college, but technically we represent less than 5% of over 40,000 students. This is just because blacks only attend black evens and whites attend white events and so on. No that there are not occasional exceptions, but im quite sure statistics would strongly uphold that statement. This school can be sort of cold hearted and has it's issues, but every school does. I would not have chosen another school bc this is a great university and it looks good on your records. I would recommend it to any one just be aware that their are issues that need to be resolved on this campus. Staying away from it wont solve the problem, so come and get an excellent education and you all should seek to change things when you arrive. I wish I would have, but it took me too long to realize what was really going on around me. Good Luck on what ever ur final decision is :-)

The engineering department, along with physics and chemistry, is light years ahead of the rest of the university. You're probably inclined to think I'm just being an arrogant engineering major -- you'll understand (and agree) if/when you come here. Honestly, I wouldn't bother coming here for other majors. It is not so much the faculty in those other majors (most are at least OK, some are truly great), but the utter mediocrity of the students. Most of them are just rich little Chicago suburb kids. They spend their four years getting drunk and end up getting some mediocre 35k/year job at some unknown company. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but shouldn't we be a little more ambitious in life?

Students in engineering and the sciences (excluding life & social sciences) I've found to be much more intelligent and hard working. This is probably true anywhere -- scientists/engineers are the nerdiest of any university -- but the difference at Illinois is particularly staggering. This seems to follows from the university's rankings: it's generally somewhere around 30-50 ranked in most disciplines but nearly all of its engineering departments are top 10, with at least half of those in top 5, and 2 or 3 are #1. I don't know why this disparity exists, but that's the way it is (perhaps the past leadership of the university really liked engineering and science to the detriment of other fields). Anyway, because of it, the different majors attract students of vastly different quality.

Looking at the big picture, 30-50 out of the hundreds of universities in the country isn't too bad, but do try to get in somewhere else if you're interested in liberal arts etc.

As far as opportunities go, they're aplenty. I'm doing an internship in Europe and have done humanitarian projects and built robots that were exhibited to hundreds of people. You're generally in a good position to get a job at a good company or get into a top ranked grad school as an Illinois engineering grad. Despite the surrounding city leaving much to be desired, there are interesting things to do whether you prefer to go party or discuss atheist philosophy.

65 administratives in the University of Illinois each make $200,000 to more than $450,000 annually launched a salary freeze in the university for administrators, faculty and other academic professionals without considering how much a person earns in a year, or whether the salary is from university or some outside funding or grants. Since they make big sum of money in a year, the freezing doesn't hurt them at all. I am wondering how such persons should be elected to so high positions.

Those 65 individuals earn an average of $241,067 ? and cost Purdue more than $15 million annually, or 2.5 percent of the salary budget for the University?s 15,474 employees.

I say to them: "Men, stop equalization when doing bad, and stop discrimination or classification when making profits!" It is God XXXXXX!

For everyone, the college years are full of ups and downs. Let me just say right now that if you are thinking of choosing U of I or just started and are looking for advice- YOU HAVE MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE! It is a very reputable school, and I'm talking about worldwide. If you are from Illinois, you are getting a heck of a dealing attending this class-leading University. You will have no problem networking and getting a job based on name recognition alone and its huge alumni association that is helpful and prideful. What does this University offer...more like what doesn't it offer? Sports are top notch, facilities are top notch, faculty and administration is top notch. Students are diverse and activities and friends are plentiful. If you choose to get lost, something will pull you back in. The size of the school should be viewed as a strength- great people, great friends and great experiences are here for the taking of U of I. Look past the negatives- overwhelming party atmosphere, some close-minded white folks, etc, but overall this school is the Best!
