Earlham helped develop critical thinking skills. The ability to come into a new situation and size it up and see problems and find solutions. It is important to understand what Earlham offers, and make sure it is what you want as as student. The social and ethical framework it offers is as important as the academics. The idea is that you will leave and make a positive contribution to the world. This is not a political or religious statement, but rather that you will be judged by your peers and will judge yourself not by how much money you made (especially if not ethically) or how successful you were (especially if success was gained by hurting others) but you will judge your success by how you improved the world, it big ways or small ways. You will also get a good education if you take advantage of what it offers.

There is much to be said about Earlham College. I came here because it was close (5 hour drive) to home, and because the grass was so beautifully green.

People find different ways to amuse themselves. Some people drink. Some play Guild Wars for 6 hours straight. Others are more civic-minded and volunteer. Find what works for you. Try different things! Go to a football game. Take part in a RPG. Climb on the roof and light one up.

I regret not getting involved in more clubs & extracurriculars. If you come here, please go to the club fair in your first semester. Don't wait for apathy to set in. In retrospect, I really appreciate the professors. They would say "hi" to me, and if I was having trouble, I knew I could go see them. Some will invite their classes over to their house for lunch. I never got the sense that any instructor didn't have time for his/her students.

As a person who really values education, Earlham has been exceptional for me. I love almost all of my professors, and I truly believe that I have become a better student and thinker because of this place. There are some downfalls (Richmond - though it is better than it seems at first, and sometimes there is a lot of alcohol on campus) but other than that, it's a great place to meet others who share a desire to learn and grow.
