The department is highly dysfunctional. The Department of Geography is a repressive place with strange pressure put on PhD students to engage in social activities with the other people from the department. It is as if professors think that the PhD students do not come to the program already with fully developed lives of their own. There is an unspoken pressure to group-think, and people who think outside of the box are scorned. Some professors delight in publicly humiliating female graduate students. American women, in particular, should stay away from here, unless you consider yourself a blank slate to be shaped and molded by dominating personality types. | | Feb 12 2009 | Geography and Geosciences | | n/a |

| | The biology graduate program is first rate. 100% of tuition and fees were covered. There were ~15 graduate students admitted when I was accepted, the small size leads to quality interactions with faculty. The faculty mentor the grad students and treat them with respect. This was evident during journal clubs and lectures (grad student opinions/comments were encouraged and welcomed). I felt as though I could approach any member of the biology faculty at KSU. An exceptional faculty with first rate researchers - If you can get accepted you won't regret KSU as a choice. | | Apr 19 2006 | Biology | | |

| | | This is an awful place everybody is so stupid it is unbelievable. I can't believe that people can be in university with such a low level of education. The people here are friendly but they are evangelical religious lunatics, the social life is very dry. If your from a fairly cosmopolitan city or another country avoid this place like the plague!! I'm getting out of here ASAP. This experience has tainted my view of the American education system. | | May 10 2005 | Math | | |

| | | There are certain professors who are EXTREMELY approachable and helpful at Kansas State. If you are lucky enough to find them you will have an extremely successful time attending graduate school at K-State. I came in on a federal fellowship, and finished with a very generous RA position in Agronomy. On the otherhand, the administration seems to be oblivious of the student body as a whole. Offices all across campus close from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM, and most close for business by 4:30 PM. Registration is a pain in the butt, and costs $4 more if you try to do it via the web - so what's the point? Additionally, budgets are so tight that some departments do NOT interact very well - mostly due to long standing funding issues, so beware of this before attempting to do inter-disciplinary research. If you enjoy outside activities you'll love Manhattan, but if you're looking for lots of exciting cultural activities you're looking in the wrong place. Most people from Kansas are really great - but be aware of an underlying moral majority/Christian ethos that sometimes translates into open racism, homophobia and/or sexism. | | Feb 20 2003 | Engineering Department | | The soil organic matter continuum in the great plains: native and mana |
