I'm completing my second year as an onlineMay 18 2016Communications
I'm completing my second year as an online student in Asbury's Master of Communication Arts program, with an emphasis in Digital Storytelling. For those who aren't familiar with Asbury, it is a small, private, Christian college with a strong academic reputation (it is ranked #3 in US News and World Report's 2015 Best Colleges, South Region). Undergraduate students have a strict honor code to live by and the school requires on-campus students to attend chapel regularly. The school is very small with only around 2,000 students which makes for a very family like atmosphere.

The School's Media Communications programs are probably the strongest majors within the entire university. Asbury recently built a new, multi-million dollar communications building with a new studio, equipment, classrooms, and even actual movie sets from Hollywood included into the building. It is a first class facility. The school also produces a television pilot every year and brings in Hollywood veterans to direct these pilots, allowing students the opportunity to work alongside someone with industry credentials and connections. The school also produces independent feature films including Hope Bridge (starring Kevin Sorbo) and the upcoming Faith, Love, and Chocolate, which was filmed on campus during the summer of 2015. The faculty is average. Some are very, very good (Andrea Nasfell) while others are Asbury alums who likely got into their position because of personal connections. It's like most colleges in that regard, a mixed bag.The undergraduate students I've encountered seem quite sharp and I think Asbury, as a private college, does an excellent job of helping them stay on track and focus on the right things in their lives (schoolwork and faith). The school has an excellent academic reputation and an Asbury degree will help with getting a job or attending a first-tier graduate program. Besides Baylor and possibly SMU, I think Asbury is probably in the top tier of Christian colleges academically. The school is trying to offer some online programs (including an MFA in Film) but, keep in mind, you will likely need to be on campus during these programs at times. While they might be considered online, they are more "low residency", in my opinion. There are so many first class opportunities and resources at Asbury's campus though, you'll enjoy your time there immensely. I would not recommend the school for someone who isn't Christian though as it is a major part of the institution's focus.
