| Quite Bright | If you are trying to find a school that sees dollars signs instead of students, you are looking at the right place! They will do anything in their power to tweak things in order to move up in the US World News rankings, regardless of how it effects the students. When it comes to studying abroad, there are only a handful of semester options. And if you find a university that has an option that you are really interested in, if it involves you not paying centre the semester's tuition, they will try to blockade your efforts in any way possible. The housing staff is insane--they make it impossible for you to live off campus. As a 22 year old, you would think by now you would have the decision, but think again. And if you are lucky enough to fake a severe illness and get off campus, they force you to pay the 2 to 3 grand for a meal plan, even though the food is on par with prison slop--super unhealthy, deep fried, and recycled longer than it should. Student diversity is an absolute joke. Alot can be learned from the real world when you are surrounded by all white, upper-middle class, spoiled brats. And if you are a person of color, don't think you won't be tokenized and pulled into every picture for a Centre billboard boasting about our 'diversity.' Ha. As far as safety...as a female, take self defense classes and always always always go with a friend that will not leave you behind. I know countless women who have been sexually harassed/assaulted, and IF reported, they say that they will take it seriously, but never do. They refuse to expell students, even on fair grounds, because they are too afraid of pissing off possible alumni that might give the school money. Even for students that are caught smoking pot, they only get suspended until the end of the semester. Too bad they don't catch the majority of the frat guys that are snorting coke and other various pills. Centre is like Pleasantville---they would like to give the illusion of a harmonious, perfect campus, but it is FAR from it. If you a rich, conservative, close-minded, and sexist, aren't interested in student diversity, and feel like you would thrive in a don't-ask-dont-tell environment, go ahead and write that check for 37 grand (oh, and don't even think that tuition won't increase 2 g's every year). If I could do it all again--or if it weren't too late to transfer--I would take my money elsewhere, where they are friendly and helpful and actually care about my well-being and future. | Innovation: A-, Individual Value: F | | | |

| Super Brilliant | Centre really needs to branch out and get more out of state students, because if you are not from kentucky you are a minority and are treated differently. I had an awful year and had to transfer because it was an awful city with nothing in it and the students don't like people from out of state. The "social" scene is the same EVERY WEEKEND. | Friendliness: A-, Education Quality: F | | | |

| Quite Bright | for the first couple years students tend to want to transfer to a state school because Centre's policies are really political and self-indulgent. After sophomore year, students tend to figure out what they are good at and get closer to the faculty in their departments, so things tend to work out just fine if you stick with it. The classes are really challenging and take a lot of work--more than one would expect, especially compared to the state schools. There's a motto of work hard, play harder here at Centre and it is taken advantage of to the fullest. The hardest thing to deal with is time management and balancing the social scene with the academic scene. The social scene gets a little old after awhile because fraternity parties seem to be the norm/are the norm. But there are ways to escape the redundancy--escaping to louisville [1 1/2 hours away] and lexington [40 minutes away] is usually your best bet. A student's relationship with the college is usually love-hate and the percentages for either side vary given the time of year. | Collaboration/Competitive: A+, Surrounding City: C | | | |

The art department is awesome, except for Steven Powell, the glassblower. He has this exclusive 'good ol boys club' of his glassblowing students that work for him. He is an asshole in class, and it's usually his upper level students who end up teaching. I know large universities have TA's and all, but Centre College is about having a personal education and prides its reputation on a wonderful faculty. I would say take Steve Powell out of the picture and the art department would be a wonderful, harmonious place. And, if you're a 2D or Art History major, you don't ever have to take his class so you can get around him if you wish.
The college prides itsself on being challenging, they like to keep the student body at a B- average, so the professors stick to a curve. I felt like there were several instances when students who worked as hard or harder than their peers became victims of the curve, which is not objective. My major complaint about the college is that I was not graded on my understanding and knowledge, but on that of my classmates. There are lots of very intelligent students at Centre, so this makes life a little tough when you're applying to graduate schools with a b/b- gpa from centre, competing with students from state schools who have 3.5 gpa or higher who might not have been admitted to Centre based on aptitude. I have been fortunate to have WONDERFUL professors! getting rec letters was no sweat - I visited their homes, went on international trips, and got to know them as mentors in the most personal sense. The faculty at Centre is awesome and definatly goes out of their way for their students, even under the constraints of the grading curve. They are also all PhD's with tons of experience, rather than other students teaching students or instructors without english fluency. | Preparedness: -, Reputation: - | | | |
