Many of the questions above appeared to be geared towards research. Since my graduate program doesn't involve research (to my knowledge), I can't comment on that factor of the program.
On the positive side, the faculty and students seem to be very nice people at KSU. However, there are some negatives to consider before attending this school:
First, rarely do instructors speak clear english. Two instructors I can think of are Indian and Iranian (there are other foreign instructors as well), and there is definitely a communication gap. If you can learn primarily from your textbox and the Internet, you should be fine. KSU spins this as a positive, saying "We cater to international students", which I find somewhat annoying.
Second, the quality of classes is very poor. Last semester I took a course that contained both undergrad and graduate students. The undergrads were all KSU students, of course, but the graduate students were from various other schools. The end result was that the undergraduate students couldn't keep up, and the class was "dumbed down" so much that we no longer covered the subject matter, but instead covered extremely low-level basics that should have been taught in 100- and 200-level undergraduate classes. It was really a waste of money. I've actually heard people say that KSU will give anyone a degree because they want the money (thus the A+ in the "Completion" category). You may learn something, but if you're fairly knowledgeable already, you won't get what you should out of your program.
Third, KSU has a very bad educational quality reputation in the local area. I've had more than one person tell me that KSU on your resume is "career suicide." It's disheartening to hear comments like this, but you should know this before you commit your education to this university. I am not sure if my graduate degree is going to be worth having.
Fourth, there are no TA positions available, from what I've seen. No obvious research is being done. Instructors simply teach classes and students get grades, much like an undergraduate program.
As a side note, you should know that this school is a minority university, so if you are caucasian, be prepared, because *you* will be the minority. It's apparent that the faculty try very. Unfortunately, the instructional quality is just not there. | | Jun 23 2005 | Computer Science | | |
