For the most part, I like everything about this school aside from the academic experience. I've met a lot of great people here and there are enough fun activities to do when there is time for them...on the other hand, the "school" part of BC can really bring down the quality of life here. Classwork is rarely (if ever) interesting or motivating, and I find myself doing work because I have to rather than because I want to--and I'm a person who likes learning! I find that teachers here are more concerned with making sure students can spit back the information they are taught rather than getting them to do any real experiential or self-motivated learning. Also, "the core" (the 15 or so required classes for every Arts & Sciences student) is miserable. Superficial learning, lots of busy work, large classes, and not much else. I will be very happy to get out of here when I graduate.

BC is a bit rigorous on their courseworks, but it's possible to get As if you come to class and do your assignments. Comparing BC to Holy Cross, HC is very intense on academics. Boston College is a school that has the "competitor" reputation, but with less stress than other competitive private colleges. Students choose BC over other quality schools because they want some college life outside of academics. As a result you won't see as much cut throat competition for grades as you would at the more academically focused colleges.

Not so bright
Was a horrible experience. Campus cops treat kids with no respect. Administration out of touch with the student body

I do not personally connect with this campus, but there are many people that would. The football team is a big deal to people here. Drinking (though typically not smoking) is a priority. That works for a lot of people and it's not hard to find similarly fun activities.

I, however, drink casually without being a partier, and have no burning interest in athletics. I'd rather engage in generally strange conversations or pull an all-nighter painting messages on classroom ceilings. I have found the general population to be close-minded and critical of such behavior-- people seem stiff and uninterested in the abnormal. The judgmental attitude or the student body has made attending this campus an unsatisfying experience. I've found good people and made great friends, but they all feel just as disconnected from the greater populous.

There is no reason to rule out BC as a potentially perfect fit, but be aware that more eccentric students may feel out of place.
