PROS- There were some good parts to SSC.
*Coming from a small town, I found going to a smaller college to be a better transition than would be going to a larger university.
*The professors in my major were excellent, and I loved the courses that came with it.
*Campus is only about a mile from downtown Salem, a beautiful city if you ever get the chance to walk around in.
*Most of the RA's were very nice. I lived in the freshman dorm in Peabody Hall, and they made living here every easy.
*I made a lot of friends, all of them coming from different backgrounds with different majors. And being able to meet a variety of people in the dorms was quite refreshing.

CONS- Oh boy, here's where it gets interesting:
*We DID have a library... until mid-October. Now it's shut down, and no one knows for sure when it is going to reopen.
*The dormitory maintenance is ridiculous. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting, and god forbid somebody spill a drink on the floor, resulting in a $30 charge!
*85% of the students commute, so it's quite difficult meeting anybody interesting who lives with you on campus. Plus, most students who live on campus live in nearby towns, so they go home on weekends, leaving us who do stay quite lonely.
*The food... it's bad. That's all I'm going to say.
*The dorms are right next to the projects... Enough said.
*Internet here BLOWS. It's extremely slow. I talked with a friend of mine who worked for the IT Department (actually, I think it's is the same kid who posted the comment below me), and he told me that after you've visited 25 webpages, the server kicks you offline for 2 minutes... even if you bring in an Ethernet cable, you still have the same problem.

... In the end, I decided to transfer. Mainly for personal reasons, but SSC did have a large impact on my decision. I would recommend this school, but only if you live in the North Shore area of MA and want to commute.

Super Brilliant
I rated this as neutral, since I am an objective person, but overall my experience at SSC was negative. First, you have to understand that SSC is mostly a commuter school. Most people do not live in the dorms. I lived in the freshman dorm.

Residence life is ridiculous. They are nazis. The RD of Bowditch hall does not care about you. She is the kind of person who doesn't allow you to do things "because she said so".

Some of the students were bearable, and I was able to find a group of friends who had a substantially usable portion of gray matter between their ears. I wish I could have said the same for the rest of my peers. I don't know if every college is like this, but it seemed like most of the kids were immature. They had their hands held by mommy and daddy their entire life, and when they got to SSC it was like a whole new world. They could drink/smoke without any parents to worry about. But, unfortunately, this led to the bathrooms being disgusting 100% of the time, and a few thousand dollars worth of damage charges.

Sports teams were horrible at this school. For some reason, if you were on a sports team you got to choose your classes before everyone else. That means all the 'good' classes filled up within hours of registration. Registration was a horror show. Mostly because it is done through the school's website.

Speaking of the website, it is horrible. When it does work, its slow. As mentioned, you have to register for classes online. Registration opens up at 6am. I was on my PC with lists of classes at 5:45am. All of the classes I wanted were already full. So were my backups, and the backups for my backups. I ended up with a crappy schedule that did NOT work for me.

The faculty were nice. I heard about two or three really bad professors, but I never had any. They were all helpful, easy to approach, and some were willing to work with me on assignments for other classes (ie: my sociology professor helped me with an english paper).

Please, remember: you get what you paid for.

I went back to school after a long absence to finish a degree I started at a large urban school. The cost of attending SSC ($4,000 vs. $35,000) made it possible for me to attain my degree with no debt. NONE. That's a big plus. Of course, the cirriculum was not as challenging as I would have liked and the opportunities for research or customizing of my major were not what they would have been at a larger school. That is the trade off here. I was able to interact freely with the faculty daily; something that was impossible at the other school. I achieved my goal of being accepted to a good graduate school. Although I do think I will be behind many of my peers in terms of content breadth, hard work will hopefully narrow the gap.

The administration at SSC is probably the worst part. Going to the registrar, bursar, financial aid, or residence life office is not a good experience. The people there are often rude and unhelpful. When they do help you, it's like they're doing you some kind of huge favor. Sometimes they will send to you another building, only for that building to send you right back. They make it clear that they're not your friends and they'd rather not waste their time on you.

Through the majority of the year I spent there, the library was shutdown. Resources were scattered across the campus, but they didn't measure up to the library.

The first two months of school I had no idea who my academic advisor was because getting in touch with her was near impossible. She would responds to e-mails days later. She only had specific hours (usually early in the morning, during class) which she would be in her office. Twice I went during that time and she wasn't there.

The one campus bookstore is horrible. Prepare to stand in line for a good half hour, 45 minutes. The prices are absolutely ridiculous. Purchase your books online!

The dorms are disgusting. The janitors do not clean the bathrooms, they HOSE THEM DOWN and then leave them to soak in water. You'll step into the bathroom and soak the bottom of your pants. Janitors refill soap dispensers, paper towels and toilet paper when they feel like it (sometimes once every few weeks). The shower curtains are often covered in mold and go unchanged for weeks.

It's practically 100 degrees in the academic buildings. It's hard to concentrate under those conditions.

The food in the cafeteria (provided by the meal plan) is plain awful. It tastes like microwaved week-old left-overs. There is only one cash register. The employees are rude and arrogant.

Most of the students I met were friendly, but if you're planning on living on campus then expect to spend the weekends virtually alone. Nobody stays.

My experience at SSC was overwhelmingly negative, but I did make some good friends, had a few great classes and professors. I did get something out of it, but I wouldn't go back and I wouldn't recommend the school to anyone.
