UMass Boston is a great school. Any school is what you make it but UMB has everything for you to make it great. It’s a moderately sized state school but the professors are accessible and friendly. Also, there are plenty of opportunities on campus, such as athletics (both for spectators and participants), student organizations like student government and many others. Plus, Boston is your playground. Just hop on the T and explore the city. There are no dorms at UMB. Even though this is not a secret some kids seem to be surprised when they get here. You have to find your own place which really disperses the student body. Most of the complaints about the university come from kids who came here for a semester and transferred out because UMB is not a traditional college and they felt that their social life was suffering because of the lack of dorms. In response to this I urge people to give it time. Not having dorms means that you don’t meet as many people as quickly as you would at say UMass Amherst but you will meet a lot of people through classes. Once you do the campus that was full of strangers becomes much more friendly and enjoyable. UMB is a great school where you have a beautiful campus view, accessible friendly professors and hard working students who appreciate that there are many ways to be educated and that everyone brings something to the table. | Education Quality: A+, Campus Maintenance: C-

I love UMass Boston. I am local, from Arlington, and could not afford to leave. At first I was upset I couldn’t go off and get away but now I am thrilled that I stuck around. I would not park on campus even though I have here and there (if you wake up late it will cost you six bucks to park). The campus is super accessible via public transportation and the shuttle bus runs constantly (you never wait more than five minutes and about 90% of the time it’s at the stop waiting to fill up). The faculty is super accessible each faculty posts their office hours but I have met with multiple professors outside of their office hours for clarification on classroom material. People say the buildings are falling apart I see no sign of that. I could see if people thought they were ugly but they are certainly not falling apart (the campus is simply a fortress). I also saw that someone thought the maintenance crew was poor I don’t think this could be further from the truth. The buildings are immaculate especially the most important parts like the bathrooms. Each student who attends UMass Boston wants to be their, they are paying for their education and they are dedicated to school 100%. That being said the social scene is stunted due to the fact that it’s a commuter school. The students are friendly and I have met a lot of nice people but I do rely on friends that I have known outside of school for most of my social connections. But UMass Boston is in Boston so it’s always fun to go down town and explore or meet up with students from other Boston area schools a lot of my friends go to schools like tufts, northeastern, Bentley and BU also its easy to hope on the commuter rail from south station to visit friends at Bridgewater or Providence. Each day I wake up and am happy to go to school. I feel like UMass Boston, with challenging academics, great professors, and an accessible and beautiful campus is a hidden gem among all of the expensive private schools in Boston. | Education Quality: A+, Social Life: C-

| Bright | I am the one who should not have gone to college right out of high school. Now I am 28 studying at umass and could not be happier. You do not go here to party, you go here to learn. Everyone is there because they want to be. Professors are super helpful. Once you get through the required classes, you are golden. I have had 3 classes with under 10 students in them. Good luck finding that at BU. Go there because you are ready and willing to learn, not for the traditional college experience of drinking kegs in a dorm room. go to bu for that. Go there to study and you can't go wrong. And the campus is on the beautiful harbor. A 5 minute drive to downtown. its hard to go wrong, just know that this is not a traditional college. | Education Quality: A+, Social Life: C- | | | |
