UMass Dartmouth seemed like a cool alternative to UMass Amherst. Upon commencement, however, events swiftly and surely altered my perception of the institution. The dormotories, with the exception of the newest upperclass halls, are in shambles. The staff is either overworked or completely inept. Furthermore, vandalism was frequent, and exorbitent repair fees were quick to follow for the entire building. The buildings are slabs of 60s concrete and surrounded by a busy ring road which students are forced to cross multiple times daily. On-campus underclassmen are forced to purchase a meal plan, but the selection is sub-standard and the staff seem to consist mostly of ex-convicts. As far as social life goes, there are average groups like theatre, greek life, masspirg, etc. However, there is also a newly formed mob of "zombies" and soldiers who combat each other across campus. Many of my peers found this behaviour eccentric and obnoxious. The faculty is a mix of dedicated professors and schoolastic mercenaries. Though at times helpful, most will be subtly opinionated or condescending. At $20,000 a year, I rate this college a five out of ten for overall value.

UMD is definitely a great school, however their professors need training in proper advising. I had a tremendous amount of trouble with academic advising, and I heard the same from about 40% of the students. Otherwise, the University is great. In response to the increased number of applicants, they are buidling new and improved dorms. UMD also has a great support network, including counseling, student development, career center, and reasearch librarians. Also, there are many individual centers, such as the GLBT Center, the Women's Resource Center, a nice gym, fitness room and pool. The professors range from excellant and absolutely outstanding, to "I can't believe this person is a college professor, because I haven't learned anything in this class". About 25% of the professors are outstanding, 40% are average, and 35% are less than average. THe university is growing rapidly, and I think within a few years it will catch up with itself and provide an excellant well-rounded education.

Don't waste your money and time at this school. I didn't know it was possible to waste thousands of dollars on an education, but you can here at umass. Thank goodness for the friends you make here because the school in general sucks. I am a crime and justice studies major, so i can't speak much for other departments. But if you plan on being a criminal justice major go somewhere else. I should have just gone to Bridgewater State University but the reason I didn't is because I didn't feel like driving the 45 min commute (Umass is 15 mins away from me). Looking back at it now I wouldnl't have even applied to umass if i could do it all over again. Words can't express how frustrated I am with this institution. They care more about the money than the student, don't be surprised to figure that out real quick if you come here. Campus life is actually not that bad though. If you like to party and have a good time, meet new people, then you'll have fun and be fine. Beware of campus police though, they can be a pain! lol
