I'm a rising senior painting major and though there are significant frustrations with some of the decisions the school makes (particularly how to spend the rising tuition fees) Overall it has been a positive experience and the faculty and classes have really helped me in developing as an artist.

MICA is where a young artist needs to be. At this current point in time it has a good energy with geniune and inspired thinking. I was a student from 1997-2000 and I teach there during the summers so I have some recent knowledge. I feel that it was good for me then and now, teaching me theory and improving my critical thinking skills, but also the more general problem solving skills I needed to make it day to day as an artist. Baltimore is a dangerous city, it is the modern version of the Wild West, and honestly, and until recently MICA has not had enough money to make their "campus" what any suburban kid would consider safe. This was part of my education. My advice would be to have a car, but don't leave anything in it, or it will get broken into. This makes things much safer and will allow you to take advantage of all the wonderful nearby musuems and cities. I would do it again, the students work and have ambition, the teachers are talented and articulate. If you want to go to school to party, this is not the place. If you want to learn about the romance of the artistic life, MICA will be a fulfilling experience.

MICA is somewhat of a joke. The amount of pressure put on you to be unique & successful can be overwhelming. This demand isn't followed through with from the education. There is often a lot of miscommunication. The acamdemic classes are normally very general and simple. The studio courses in the fine art departments are so-so. Some are good, some are horrible....There are not enough faculty to teach. Every semester there are more and more problems with classes because you never can get the classes you want because there aren't enough classes to choose from. If you are an upperclassmen forget it. Every year MICA acepts more and more freshman who fill up the classes. No faculty, not many options for classes. The only thing you can hope for when you get out of here is having a prestigeous degree. Othere than that there isn't much help with planning on finding a job.
