I loved this place except that it was in Baltimore! What a shit pit. Thankfully, Washington, DC and Philly and especially New York are not that far away. Coming from Seattle, this school had destinct plusses and minuses. Plus -- Seattle is a Yeah, Whatever place. So whatever you are, whatever your pose, whatever your dress, this school is like Seattle where anything is fine. Negative --Baltimore is a shit pit so don't be yourself outside the environment of the school and the art world the school feeds into.
Can I say too much how great the faculty are? Can I say how progressive the school is? My art world in Seattle was so wide open ... and yet in the uptight east (so we always said) there was such an openness. Pierre, my boy friend, is a curator in Seattle and 20 years older than me. We became a twosome when I was 16 and he 36 and his abilities in Impressionism was known and respected in Baltimore so when I moved here he was accepted by my professors. I was, I guess, expecting something else. Adcive, be candid, the proft says. So, go for it. Don't worry about what your teachers or parents say. Put it out there. This school, after all the usual shit schools are about, IS about doing art well, so if you do art well, don't worry about anything else. Gays are more than welcome as are cross dressers, young girls with much older boyfriends (like me!), half naked girls who love to show their bodies off (like me!), people who love Bach (me, too!), and whatever. If you're good at art, you can be whatever you want, so be it! | Education Quality: B+, Surrounding City: D

| Quite Bright |
I'm a 20 year old female from NYC. My first year at MICA was a difficult adjustment- Baltimore is a hard place to get used to when you come from such a stimulating city as I did. However, Baltimore itself would have to be my biggest negative about MICA. MICA is expensive, however if you are talented they will give you aid. I received about 30 percent of my tuition covered for from my portfolio alone. Although it isn't the easiest thing in the world to pay for school, I love it here. The school itself is amazing- the facilities are unbelievable, and often a lot of supplies are provided for you. There are a lot of jerky hipsters here, but not everyone is like that ( I had enough of that garbage in nyc.) I have had one crappy professor but I do not feel he is an overall reflection of the school. Everyone here is extremely willing to help you with your work. If you are serious and semi-independent, you will do very well here. The work load is intense, but if you love art (and your courses in general) you will not have a difficult time. There are some people here that are uptight and snobby, but I think you find a lot of that at art schools in general. I have met a lot of great people, and don't exactly feel as though there are cliques, except for hipsters. Being here, I have been introduced to so many new things. I have learned a lot too. The place is about what you get out of it, so if you are willing to do the work and open yourself up to learning (do not come in with the "i'm the best artist in the world attitude") then you will ultimately better yourself by being here. | Education Quality: A+, Perceived Campus Safety: D-

First College of Art in the United States. One of the greatest.
You are surrounded by geniuses at MICA. This school doesn't get as much publicity as the schools in NYC, this has actually helped the school, browsing art schools I found that many of them were far too commercialized. MICA maintains being the Art school that has a legendary reputation in a way which is slightly distanced and independent from the typical vision of how art schools work. MICA has the undisputed BEST department of Painting...Hence the name College of art as opposed to school of design. Apply to MICA. | Education Quality: A+, Perceived Campus Safety: B-
