| Bright | The previous poster is absolutely right. This school simply prepares you for nothing in the outside competitive world. But this fact means nothing to the student body as they were the most apathetic and unambitious group of slackers I've ever met. Hardly anyone seemed to give any thought to what they would do after graduating. Plans and goals centered on if the weather was nice enough to go windsurfing or where the next party was going to be rather than a career focus. Not to mention the whole "employers value a liberal arts education" mantra the administration constantly repeated. No, an employer doesn't give any value to someone with no specific skill sets and a degree from a school that's little known even in state and unknown completely outside Maryland. I transferred because I knew that if I didn't have a degree from a more competitive and focused institution I'd be run over in the real world. | Friendliness: B, Individual Value: F | | | |

| Bright | I should have known when I initially had issues with the admissions department when I applied and they hosed my application package. From that point on, the interaction with SMCM has been less than professional. Everything seems to be done slipshod. I don't know whether it has to do with the laid back atmosphere of being on the water, but there is no follow-through with the administration. They talk a great game, but don't follow through and that affects everything from housing issues to food preparation to academic preparedness and extends even to grounds maintenance. Do you realize that we got a day off for snow when we only had three inches on the ground? It might be the public honors college in Maryland, but I would have been better off at UMBC. | Perceived Campus Safety: A, Surrounding City: F | | | |

| Average | If you are a student of color, I would not suggest you go to this school. The classes are biased and professors are also. It is not fun whatsoever. The students are closeminded and do not try to get to know people of other races unless they "act white." Overall, just go to another school!!! | Perceived Campus Safety: A-, Education Quality: F | | | |

| Quite Bright |
I graduated 6 years ago and regret going to SMC. I was a music major and I was given such a poor education that it is impossible to survive in the music business as a professional. This year I started studying private ear training (a course that is required at SMCM) and I am finally understanding and hear music the way I should have been taught back then. I am not the only one from my class who feels robbed, in fact all of us do.
I hate SMC with a passion for making me believe that I was getting a good education, when in fact I was a number to their fundraising efforts. Don't let the River Concert Series fool you. Just because the teachers went to a conservatory, does not mean it is a conservatory environment. I have memories of my private teacher taking 20 minute phone calls during my lessons, in which I would wait out in the hall, and sometimes showing up 2 hours late. In beginner theory, the professor sometimes could not answer my questions and would say, 'just go with it'. The only light (maybe it has changed since) is Dr. Froom. That man gave me the tools and the consideration to teach me correctly. I am greatful for his teachings. He is brilliant and worth private study. All in all, if I had gone into a different field, I think I would have been happy at SMCM. But looking back, I morn for all the time I put in, only to be taught so poorly. The music department is a recruiting department more than anything else. Musicians: Don't waste your money, time or your FUTURE!!! The better musicians, are getting a better education. If it was a business, I would have gotten a refund for something that was not delivered. | Campus Aesthetics: A+, Education Quality: F | | | |
