 | Quite Bright | | If your looking for a party like you get at sub-par schools please go elsewhere, that much is true. But what UMBC offers outside of that is an excellent adacdemic grounding one rarely sees at such a school of this size. The campus is very close and you are forced to find something to do on campus, as transportation is not that extensive to other places like Baltimore city which I like. UMBC is an excellent university for all that it offers to its students, and one really has to try hear to have a life outside of life in the library. No loud-mouthed chicks acting like wild animals, drunks are a rarity, and intelligent students are the best and only reason UMBC has the reputation it does, smart people are attracted to eachother, common sense. If you think this is a joke, think again. So many of the people I know who went to HBCUs or places like Frostburg can't handle the work here, and they drop out, because they weren't prepared to learn at this level. All in all, come to this school if you want to learn and grow, but they better be prepared for a real challenge, this place will kick you butt! | Collaboration/Competitive: A+, Education Quality: F | | | |

| | Average | | Coming to UMBC as transfer student I expected a lot. But thus far, I have been unpleased. Okay first off, if you are student who has not been academically challenged or prepared for college (meaning your high school was crap and your math, reading, and writing skills are below average) then you may not want to attend here. There is a reason why UMBC has won twice in a row #1 in up and coming school. The academics are challenging and the school moves at a fast pace. Please do not get behind in your work because it will affect the rest of your semester, even if it is in the early part. If you were to ask different students about the academics you would get different responses. But I am telling you, its hard and the support system is unrecognized. If you feel like you can handle anything and is up for the challenging, then welcome. If not, then there are other schools that will assist you needs to help you make it. Overall, UMBC is a GREAT school and will prepare you for some top ranked graduate schools. The social life at UMBC is unbelievable! Sometimes it doesn?t feel like I am in college. Like really, it?s boring. The "activities" they offer only attracts certain types of people. There is not a variety of student?s organizations and programs for the variety of students. The weekends are horrible. Because most of the students are from the area, so they go home, leaving the school a ghost town. The few parties I have attended were wack! The greek life sucks! You almost never see them do anything. Especially the African American greek organizations. Everything is too low key! People keep things to themselves so you never know what is going on around campus...well because most of the time, nothing is going on. I do believe the main reason for why the social life sucks, is because most of the student population consist of commuters. Going to UMBC is like going to a four year community college with dorms! If you want that fun social life of college, then UMBC is NOT the school you should be at. If you are a quiet person that only wants to focus on school and have few or no friends, then welcome! And if you become a lonelier it?s okay, you are not alone and the students will not pick or mess with you. People are pretty much in their ?own worlds? here. I have my pro and cons about UMBC, which makes it hard to decide whether or not I should transfer. The students and staff can be friendly and welcoming. During "Welcome Week", I must say I was pleased in how UMBC welcome their new students. There was events to attend everyday were you could meet people! That I was pleased about, and it did help me establish some friendships. The staffs who answer the phones are always friendly and try to answer as many questions you have. The professors are better than what I expected. Although they have limited office hours (once a week for an hour), they are approachable and can assist you. The food is pretty good. The dining hall has a variety of choices and the quality is satisfying. In the lower level of the commons (basically student union) you would find more places to eat, similar to a mall?s eatery. There is also a Chick Fil A and Starbucks on campus. Anywhere on campus to decide eat, you can use your meal card, which is one of the features about the school I love! So do your research on UMBC. Its not a bad school but do lack some of things that would make your college experiences memorable. | Useful Schoolwork: A+, Social Life: F | | | |

Ok Im going to outline UMBC experience as best I can. Application Process:
-They are extremely difficult to get into without prior job experience. I interned for an electrical engineering firm prior to attending UMBC and this definitely helped get me in. I graduated with a 3.14 unweighted. To give you an idea how much this helps, my roommate is a volunteer firefighter, and he interned with Department of Energy during his senior year of highschool. HE GRADUATED WITH 2.7 GPA AND STILL GOT IN!!!!Orientation: Schedule your classes before orientation. When I got to meet with my student advisor I was extremely disappointed. some are simply doing it for the paycheck and have little to no idea what they are doing, while others actually know what you need. Keep in mind that the advisors you meet with ARE STUDENTS, they did not really go through any special training and simply operate based on what they know about the school. Campus Life: -Some Parties are good and some suck. The newer dorms are really nice whereas potomac and patapsico blow. Basically Res-life is a bunch of chodes. they targetted our room because we had a pot banner on our wall. They actually sniff around from door to door for pot which is totally lame seeing as that's pretty much the only other thing to do here other than drink, workout, and study with other people. Oh and if you are going to smoke, do it off-campus since that's pretty much what they care about. The RA's don't care if you are drunk or high they just don't want you to do it there. Essentially it's a liability thing. They pretty much could care less about sex and actually offer free latex condoms at health services. All in all this is not a party school, its a study school with benefits. Food: -The food here is meteocre and they only really have decent home-style food when the tours come. To test this theory i spread a rumor amongst the staff that a tour would be coming through in a couple days and lo and behold the food did get better for a day or two. Basically when you tour here, take the goodness of the food and subtract 30%.-The teachers are great but avoid Dr.Gloor for Math151 he is terrible, half his class doesn't even show up cuz he's such a bad teacher and would rather spend the extra time to learn it from the book. most of the teachers really care about their students and will help you if you ask them to. | Innovation: A+, Scholastic Success: F | | | |
