I would not recommend this university. The faculty are indifferent towards students. They are not very helpful and do not look out for the students. The university is located in an unsafe area especially at night. The campus is not that nice. Some of the graduate programs are undergoing re-organization like the GPILS. At this time the program lacks unity, strength, and an overall clear vision for students. Jul 19 2006 Biology

UMB is not located in a safe city or area. One has to be careful at night. The community around the university is okay but not really a nice place to go to school and enjoy a social life. Graduate school should be challenging, yet fun. The University of Maryland at Baltimore is neither. The University attempts to compete with Johns Hopkins, however, is unsuccessful. The faculty that make up the graduate programs are not the best by any means, even though they think they are top notch like Johns Hopkins. The education I obtained here is average. UMB is not an ideal place for 5 years of gaduate school. Programs in the life sciences are not highly ranked and for good reason. The institution lacks high quality faculty and as a result a graduate education at the institution is mediocre. The faculty are not friendly, engaging, or helpful. The graduate environment is not very conducive to intellectual stimulation. The university is dull and lacks true scholarship. Campus Safety is an issue. Be prepared to spend a lot of money for on-campus housing. The best thing about the school is that it is next to Edgar Allen Poe's grave. Andy's Cheesesteaks used to be good (don't buy them now). Aug 17 2005 Pharmacy

UMB is a great school--but don't live in University housing! I lived at USFS for 1 year- and although convenient, it is not worth it-it is expensive and everything is cheaply made. Aug 17 2005 Chemistry
