You have to want to serve and dedicate yourself to the institution, Naval Service, and country so do not enter without proper research. It's not for everyone, if you want a challenge and to test yourself go with vigor and pride. USNA produces leaders and as such is very rigorous. The bonds among classmates and alumni are as thick as blood and graduating from the Academy is serving your country is an honor which also has deep personal rewards, tangible and intangible. Tough on the social life but the rewards outweigh anything missed if I had attended any of the other fine institutions at which I was accepted.

USNA was not worth the effort required to attend. It is less a school and more a test of staminia and endurance to mental and physical abuse. Though I survived and had a moderately successful career - command - I would no longer encourage young men to attend as the academy since it's values are distorted and even when valid are frankly no longer relevant in today's world.

You can never truly know yourself unless you are tested. The Naval Academy forces you to know yourself at a very young age. You will find out very quickly what your strengths and weaknesses are. This is invaluable for your future life. Some people NEVER come to this revelation. You will do things at the Academy that others only dream about. It is challenging. Sometimes it can be stressful. Sometimes it will seem overwhelming. But that's all part of the process. In the end you will never regret the experience and be proud that you endured what no other college student can even relate to. The memories will last you a life time. You will learn to be a leader of men instead of when a beer chugging contest at at a Frat party. The bottom line is this: Know YOURSELF. It's not for everybody.
