 | Not so bright | I have spent almost one full year at this school at i started considering tranfering my first semester. This school has a very good faculty if you get the right prof. I found my photo tacher to lack the skills to successfully teach a demo during class. Also, the classes did not really present any hallenges to me. In one class it seemed as if we never had to follow the instructions and we completed assignments on our own changing up the rules. Also the school is very small and students are very cliqy and it seems hard to join one clique if you werent already in it. The upper classmen can be very helpful or very hurtful they tend to have that upper classmen attitude of looking down on undergraduates. Social life is awesome around portland but at the school not so much unless you drink or watch anime. Meca has no real athletics or social events for college student beside high school style 90's dance with about 40 kids. Also going to a small art school means dealing with some students that think they are the next picasco. Dealign with aragant artsist can be annoying. I felt like the classes i was taking werent benefiting me in any way. I love Portland just not MECA. I found myself bored with no homewor at this school. | Faculty Accessibility: A, Extracurricular Activities: F | | | |

| | Quite Bright | I transferred to this school as a sophomore and have gone through both phases of loving and hating it. The school itself provides a pretty high quality education, but the atmosphere created by the small, cliquey student body tends to be uninspiring. You have to be really dedicated to art in order to crank out the amount of work that will be expected of you, starting with your Foundation courses. Luckily, the faculty is helpful, available, and --dare I say-- "chill." They are a diverse group of people experienced in their fields; never condescending or narrow-minded. The fact that MECA is in one giant building makes faculty and resources even more available. If you plan on living in the Res Halls, the dorms are only a short walk away. They tell you on the tour that Portland is safe--for the most part this is true, but don't walk alone at night. Most students start off in the dorms and quickly realize an apartment is the more enjoyable and affordable way to go. The RAs in the Res Halls are constantly on the warpath to try and "catch" kids, so if you party, I advise against living there. Most of the MECA social life occurs off-campus. There are a lot of great shows that come to Portland, and if you are 21+, lots of great bars. Avoiding the "MECA bubble" (your 400 or so fellow students) can be hard at times, and dating is lame because of the severely unbalanced boy to girl ratio. Girls, look off campus. Portland has many opportunities. This applies to both meeting new people and finding work. Overall, MECA is what you make it. I guarantee you a unique experience. | Individual Value: A, Collaboration/Competitive: C+ | | | |

| | Quite Bright | I had a lot of apprehensions before going here because it was such a small school. After my first semester I realized this was the right place for me. I will say it's not the right place for everyone. You must be motivated, this is not an easy A school. The professors do not accept crap work. When you present your projects you have to know why you did what you did or you will fail. You can't BS the faculty. Also how many schools have teachers who meet up at a party, have a blast hang out and then back to business the next day. Plus for what it costs to go to school these days, if your not ready to put in the time, then don't go wasting the money. I am a straight male, boy girl ratio was in my favor. If your single it's quite easy to make a connection with someone, and if they are from Maine even better, the people of Portland are some of the nicest most down to earth people you will ever come across. Having the privilege of living and going to school in Maine was the icing on the cake. I was in California before transferring to MECA, Maine grounded me and made me see that life was more then how much money you have or what car you drive. Being there made me feel human. Salty Portland air, most beautiful Fall trees, harsh winters that force you to talk to your roommates and get to know them, and the "thaw" every Spring where 40 degrees is the temp and people are in t shirts. In closing, if your looking to get an great education in art and design, have a good time doing it, meet friends you will keep for life, then I suggest looking into MECA. Best decision I ever made. | Starting Job: Jr web designer, Preparedness: B, Reputation: B+ | | |
