Joseph's College of Maine, the only Catholic college in Maine,
offers a strong liberal arts education to men and women
of all faiths. Founded in 1912 and sponsored by the
Sisters of Mercy, the College's mission focuses on the intellectual,
spiritual, and social growth of its students within a value-centered
environment. Emphasis on service learning and internships complements the challenging
curriculum. A new four-story Academic Hall with sweeping views
of Sebago Lake opened in fall 2004. The growth in
student population has led to construction of two new residence
halls each housing 120 students in suite-style accommodations, as well
as expansion and renovation of the dining hall and a
major academic building. The Harold Alfond Student Center opened in
1999 and houses a swimming pool, a gymnasium, an elevated
jogging track, a rock-climbing wall, fitness rooms, and a dance/aerobics
studio.
Full-time undergraduate enrollment is 1,000 students. The geographic
distribution shows fifteen states and several foreign countries represented, with
a majority of students coming from the Northeast. More than
80 percent of full-time students live on campus. The residence
halls include a choice of single-sex, coed, and substance-free housing
options. Off-campus housing is available in the local area. Bon
Appetit, the campus food service, takes pride in its delicious
and varied cuisine.
Saint Joseph's College of Maine looks
to its students to take an active role in campus
leadership. Opportunities to become involved in student government, athletics, and
cultural and social organizations are numerous. The College has a
close-knit family atmosphere that permeates campus life. Social life revolves
around clubs and organizations and the many events held in
the Chalet or Alfond Center.
The College sponsors eleven
NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic teams. Recreational choices include a
strong intramural and club sports program, a private sandy beach
on Sebago Lake, a skating pond, cross-country running and ski
trails, and the Alfond Center facilities.
The 331-acre campus
hugs the shore of Sebago Lake in southern Maine, just
18 miles from Portland, and 125 miles from Boston. The
Sebago Lake region, one of Maine's most beautiful spots, is
a premier four-season recreational area. Greater Portland is well-known for
its fine restaurants and shops along with its variety of
music and concert venues, theater, art museum, symphony, public market,
and professional sports teams. The city is served by major
airlines and bus companies as well as Amtrak passenger rail
service.
