My time spent at Baker College will only serve to give me the most expensive "piece of paper" I will ever own, in the shortest amount of time. My work experience, and personal experiences outside of Baker is what has given me the tools and knowledge necessary for a successful career in IT System Administration and Management. I am only attending Baker College to obtain the “expensive piece of paper” that employers look for before they will look at your personal knowledge and abilities.
Many of the instructors who teach the courses for the Information Technology degree tracks are lacking in the English language. I watched many students struggle (including myself in a few classes) because you could not understand what the instructor was saying throughout the class due to their very poor English. When it was brought to the administration’s attention numerous times about the difficulty this added to the courses, the administration’s response was to defend the instructor’s knowledge of the subject and their years of experience in the field. Having the knowledge and being able to communicate it to another person are two very different things. If you can’t communicate that knowledge in English to the students that are paying for the course, then you should not be an instructor.
Some of the faculty at Baker College are also lacking in their skills. At one point I had a problem with my degree, where some classes that were no longer offered. When I spoke to the Dean regarding this issues she told me that my only option was to switch degrees, which would add ten more classes to my necessary classes to graduate. At this time I was only two semesters from graduating, So much for thinking outside of the box. I had to talk to people over the Dean to get my classes substituted so that I could graduate on time.
Baker College puts a lot of emphasis on “99% of our students and graduates are employed” in their ads. I am convinced that this is with little or no help from Baker College. I have been employed the entire time that I have attended Baker, but on numerous occasions I have went to their “employment help” department with my resume just to have them try to get me more interviews to look at options I might have in the field. I have not received a call for even a single interview as a result of their “employment help” in the years that I have attended Baker. I have however successfully moved up in my field twice within those same years. So when they trumpet that 99% of their students and graduates are employed, are they employed with ANY of Baker’s help, or better yet, even in the field that they are studying?
My suggestion for anyone looking for a college is to look elsewhere than Ba
