ETTERING University, founded in 1919 and changed from GMI Engineering and Management Institute on January 1, 1998, is a private, five-year institute.  The school became a subsidiary of General Motors Corporation in 1926.  In 1982, GMI became an independent institution, although ties with GM remain strong.  Its 50-acre campus is located in Flint, 75 miles from Detroit.

Kettering University (formerly GMI Engineering & Management Institute) has a distinguished history as one of America's premier technological colleges.  Founded in 1919, Kettering University has a worldwide reputation for excellence in preparing technical and managerial leaders for industry and society.  It is the special nature of the university that all students are required to participate in paid professional cooperative education (co-op) work experiences throughout their undergraduate career, alternating terms of full-time study with terms of full-time co-op.  At Kettering co-op typically begins in the first year.  Kettering students currently co-op with employers in 43 states and several countries.  Most students are able to co-op with an employer near home.  Students get a jump-start on prime careers and are admitted into top graduate schools (Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc).
