Be warned, the school markets itself well, but if you bear a disabilty status, consider privacy before disclosure. The school has policy that seems willing and able to accommodate for a wide number of needs including untimed testing and a special department to accommodate for various disabilities. However, the community's reaction to those with such minority status is not always friendly. These accommodation policies come in conflict with the strong social mores that fight to keep the community clean.

The curriculum didn't seem so bad at first but it was repetitive. A counselor first promised the social science curricula will bring hard skills to work with clients and organizations. Other colleges were studying applied research with a preparation for graduate school in the last two years. I still wondered why we were discussing the nature of the ID and EGO for the n'th time in 300 level courses. Counselors argued that this repetition set a strong foundation. I thought it saved money when we used the same books and the tests were easy. Then, came the hard reality. Endless bouts with psychodynamic theory become useless in the applied world when employers ask, "What can you do for me?" The lake effect makes winter something terrible. With the cold snow and wind, you need that solid winter gear. You also have to drive ten miles to get to something like Meijer or a party store. Those open fields make a beautiful sunset but it becomes a dark hell in winter when the sun goes away. The same storm that brings six inches of snow somewhere else will bring strong winds and 4 feet of snow in Grand Rapids. It's a hard move in a wheelchair; especially when it takes some time for them to plow the pathways. There is nothing to do there, no night life. There are no cell towers, radio stations, not many television stations. If you don't have a car, you will be stuck in the dorm and that is terribly boring.

I am a senior at gvsu and should be graduating next may 2011. Overall, I have liked it but keep in mind GVSU is not for everyone. First of all, when you start out with your freshmen year gen eds. they are really easy (some I should say) and others are b.s. but you do find your interest with them. As for my major, Accounting, I would say its around 3rd in the state, as is GV for academics, though it is comparable to MSU for regular academics (look at Princeton Review or U.S. News and World Report). As for the social scene, yes it could be better but there is more to college than getting drunk every day, if you wanna do that go to MSU or even better CMU.

Still, GV is good for those of us who like small classes and discussions with faculty. It is a combination between a large Big Ten type college and a small private college, it is a public university though. If you're looking to be taught by a graduate student at a graduate focused school (though higher reputation, people always overrate flagship universities in their respective states) then go to a Big Ten school. Also, I think GV needs to recruit more out of state and non West Michigan students (most "locals" are pretty cool though some can be close-minded, but it is good to get some diversity at any university) though they are doing that currently.

My biggest recommendation is to be involved in some sort of organization or activity outside of class. Whether it is Harry Potter Club or Greek Life it is important to be involved at GVSU in order to be part of the community. I think most people who don't like GVSU were not involved in the campus at all, and therefore complain. Also, the study abroad can be good to gain some insights on the world outside of West Michigan (I'm talking to you "locals").

Like I said overall I liked GVSU, but also GVSU has strong focuses in business, education, and health sciences/medical field. If you are not in that program, you will probably have a much different experience than myself. Just keep in mind that no college is perfect and to do your research. Furthermore, if you're out of state (I'm not but I know this) it can be cheaper to go to GV than your state flagship in state (ex. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) so make sure to check out the campus.Lastly, our sports are really good and they are free to go to, including football. GO LAKERS!!!

I decided to come here because it is suppousdly now compared to MSU and UofM, but I don't see how this comparision is made. Some straight up dumb people get into this school, and it's alot like high school. It could be just because I am a freshmen and taking gen eds, but the work load is still light. The people on campus are extremly nice. You can talk to pretty much anyone. The food is good at first, but then once welcome week is over they pull out some shit on you. There isn't alot of partys rather drinking in you dorm with your friends, and alot of people smoke weed and do other drugs. The cops are physco so gvsu screws themselves over by having a dry campus and being in the middle of nowhere. Allendale is close to downtown, but no one wants to take that shitty poo poo bus. You need a car to get away. It's easy to get in a clique of friends, but that can be a great thing. Overall GVSu is better than high school, but I feel I could be having a better college experience elsewhere.
