This is a great school with every subjectBrightMath
This is a great school with every subject you may study.... But people tend to think that you need a really high GPA to graduate in this school...... but this is not an easy school to stay, although I must say that the competition is better than schools like U of Chicago...... Just that the students aren't as innovative as they should be. Most of them are above average, hard working, but not brilliant individuals.

Question
UM is not the place to come toQuite BrightElectrical Engineering
UM is not the place to come to if you are an innovative student. The professors here are too afraid for themselves and their own egos to help you hone any ideas to fruition. Its all because they fancy themselves as MIT quality, but lacking in their richly deserved credit.

Once I went to talk to a professor about a new motherboard architecture with new memory architecture I designed -- he didn't even let me start before telling me that I didn't know anything and that I should learn something before I started talked. He said that I spoke the language, but probably don't know what it means. I found out 3 yrs later at an internship that Unisys had exactly the same design for their new system. 3 yrs earlier, a patent would have unisys paying me royalties.

I failed 3 different courses because of administration errors. More appropriately, administration unwilling to go back find out where they made an error.

If you do come here, the only way to get what you deserve is to fight for it. Don't let your scores and your GPA reflect someone elses incompetence.

The University will sure as hell not help you get a good job -- those are for the kiss-ass (and mostly cheating) 4.0 students.

On a different note, smoker:nonsmoker ratio of the student population is like 100:1. The campus has a haze that hangs over it from all the cigarette smokers. Sure there's a fair amount of marijuana, but its nothing compared to the cigarettes. If you don't smoke & you come here, you can forget about using the phrase "going outside for a breath of fresh air". You'll die of emphesema in 3.4 minutes. I lucked out since I lived mostly on north campus -- there were significantly less smokers there. But the tradeoff was that the other students were pretty antisocial & it wasnt as fun & there was nothing to do (north campus is virtually isolated on friday night + saturday + sunday).

If money were water, this university would put niagara falls to shame with how fast it drops it. One summer, They ripped out 6 large trees just so that they could make the main diag look even more like harvard's courtyard. They put in new grass, didn't water it, it died, they ripped it out again at the end of the summer, planted 12 new LARGE trees, and put new grass down. It was the dumbest thing I had ever seen. Wait, no, on north campus they put in the media union. The lsa people hate us engineers for it, but they fail to realize that we hate it just as much. The whole thing has no style, or grace.

It is not even borderline useful, the computers are always out of commision, you can never find the books you need there. It just looks like a big wad of money was plopped down for it. They got some big famous architect to do it. From my standpoint, everything on campus should be designed by students. They should have competitions where students can submit architectural drawings, logos, whatever, and whichever is chosen gets $1000 and their building built or their logo used. But, as I have already mentioned, this University doesnt care about its students. They are just underfoot.

The students have about as much effect on the University as a grain of sand in the ocean. The U also does a stellar job of keeping the students broken up, so they cannot form a cohesive student movement and bid for any change.Visiting students: DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THE UNIVERSITY LOOKS LIKE IF YOU VISIT OVER SUMMER. This University pays big bucks to completely overhaul itself for the prospective student tours. And I gotta say, it looks real real nice. Its a totally different place. Unfortunately, one week before school starts every year, they begin a big ridiculous construction project that makes the campus muddy, dirty, and inconveniences the students tremendously. Not to mention that none of the facilities are ever maintained during the school year. This place is a trash. I wish I went somewhere else.

The counselors were always unhelpful. All they did was repeat what was in the student handbook. They didn't provide any kind of personal attention and advice.
