Bright
I am a senior, and I have awesome memories here- I don't want to graduate! I had a BLAST getting to know everyone freshman year- everyone was so welcoming and the students so friendly. A lot of binge drinking.... but definitely a lot of fun. It's a really close-knit community, so by your senior year you know pretty much everyone in your class. I am glad I went here even though it is located in a small town because I think the proximity brought us all closer.

Quite Bright
St. Olaf offers great academic opportunities as well as study abroad programs, but the downside is that most students are fairly conservative and churchy. In other words, a lot of them are boring and not so open-minded. As an institution, it clings far too firmly to its religious roots. It says it strives to be an "exceptional college of the church." Why not just choose to be an "exceptional college?" Keep the loose affiliation but tone down the church-speak. It would go a long way in attracting diversity in its student body, something St. Olaf SORELY lacks. And I'm not just talking about racial and ethnic diversity, more importantly I'm talking about diversity of thought and opinion. Back in the late 80s and early 90s St. Olaf was moving in that direction. USNews ranked it 20th in its list of national liberal arts colleges, now it's not even in the top teir. Not that rankings are everything, but I believe that fact speaks volumes.

Not so bright
St. Olaf is a great academic environment. I do not regret my decision to go there. The professors genuinely care about you and the campus is stunning. The students are generally very bright and if you take advantage of everything the school has to offer it will prepare you for an exciting, rewarding life. Those looking for a really wild social scene will probably want to look elsewhere. A weekend at St. Olaf can be somewhat unexciting at times and its not uncommon for students to spend a Friday or Saturday night studying. Still, my friends and I would just head up to Minneapolis/St. Paul if we absolutely had to get off "The Hill."
Education Quality: A+, Social Life: B
