Cottey is one of those schools where it is exactly what you're looking for or it isn't. It is in a very small rural town in Missouri...so keep that in mind.
If you are into clubbing, drinking, etc....heading over to Pitt State or up to Kansas City is the only way to take care of that. But if that is what you're into instead of studying and actually taking advantage of what you're paying Cottey to do then you would definitely be better off in a state school.
The classes are small, the teachers are quirky and helpful, and the students are from ALL over. Diversity, while not very prevelant off of campus is quite visible on campus. The food is awesome at Cottey, as well as the suite life, and there is always the Europe trip your soph. year. The class selection isn't the best but considering you're looking at a private, liberal arts, TWO year school its either a concession you're willing to make or it isn't.
For the most part, I absolutely loved Cottey. I am from the other side of the country and it was my home away from home. Its like a huge family. You make life-long friends and make awesome memories. When you don't have anything to do (like, ahem, clubbing) you come up with the most random stuff to do and ultimately have more fun in the long run. Cottey is that extra boost you need before actually moving out of your parents house and being out on your own. It helps shape strong, independent young women....
So putting aside the kodak moments and corny comments- Cottey is a great fit if you're looking for the step inbetween high-school and the real world and it certainly helps prepare you for it.

Cottey was the worst thing that happened to me. The surrounding city is in rural Missouri, if you're from a metropolitan... your chances of being happy here are extremely low. The town is also extremely white. The school advertises it as diverse but HAHA... it is so not. No diversity whatsoever. Surrounding towns are racist. Alot of the girls here are friendly, the dorm life is pretty nice. If you come here, beware that you will be limited to each one or two professors in your majoring field. So if you don't like them... tough luck. I wouldn't really recommend this school... it's absolutely pathetic. It feels like an academic summer camp for girls that goes on nine months a year. You're extremely limited over here... you are stuck in a Cottey bubble. As a Political Science major, it was the worst. Students are so uninformed. You do have opportunities to meet guys if you have a car at Pittsburg State or Wentworth (1 to 2 hours away). Social life absolutely is horrid... the only thing the school has to bribe students to coming here is the food, suite life, and the Europe trip. I think the only thing I liked about this school were the small classes. But then you have stupid attendance policies which are absolutely dumb... we're not in high school.

I LOVED COTTEY! It was seriously the best two years of my life! I would recommend becoming extremely involved on campus. I was an active member/officer in six organizations, as well as a Resident Assistant my second year. Oh, yeah...and they send you to Europe for a week for FREE! Don't worry about it being a women's college. Boys are not needed. There is too much fun to be had for them.

Cottey Demanded taking charge of your career preparaton. It's what you are in college for. As a result I have been able to be a mentor more so than I would have dreamed. I also can make good decisions. I have chosen to stay at home and raise my children and support my husband who travels weekly and is under high stress. I couldn't do this without having the background of becoming myself and being satisfied with my families needs and my choices. I also am currently able to juggle a new extremely flexible part time job. For me it's not about big bucks, although with my training I could be making that.
Also, when I transferred to my 4 year institution, I found that they graded on a curve and most of the sudents had no clue what some things were. The thought being that if everyone doesn't know it, it raises the grade for everyone. I want science students to know their stuff. most of their careers will be about humans in some way shape or form! I'm average, so I was surprised at the relaxed attitude of the profs of my new school. And, it made me reaize how much Cottey had helped me!
