KCAI gave me the technical art skills and the business and life knowledge that I do not think I could have gotten anywhere else. Art is not as easy of a field as many think and KCAI prepared me to work my butt off and get what I wanted out of the art world. My sculpture professors were some of the top in their field, owning prestigous galleries, getting huge federal and city grants for public art work for themselves and their students and always being there to help with a technical or conceptual problem. The facilities are not rivaled by anywhere in the country, even grad schools, and students can work with materials and techniques that no one else can, and safely too. The community is great and those that may say otherwise are bitter becasue they did not expect to be pushed as hard as students are at this school. It is not an easy ride but it is sure worth it. I wouldnt trade it for the world

I graduated from KCAI in 05, I transferred from another University and was looking to go into computer animation. A rep. from Pratt told me to go to KCAI for their foundation year and apply to other schools to get a better scholarship. I ended up loving my time at KCAI. I did not transfer, except to spend a semester in Germany. The teachers significantly affected my life. This is the kind of school where you cry when you leave.

The department of sculpture was once great but due to the loss of its faculty and a new administration it is unsafe. The former technician who does not even have an art degree is the chairperson of the department. people are seriously injured weekly. toxic iron casting techniques that have been banned by federal law are used anyways endangering the health of everyone exposed. students are often robbed or assulted on campus includding myself. i was assulted with a deadly weapon, a small firearm. the students and teachers taunt each other in an unprofessional way. there is extreme racism, sexism, and homophobia aroudn the school. The faculty ofen uses illegal narcotics with the students. there is an overall negative attitude on campus. The student body is lathargic, degraded and looked down upon by the administration as dollar signs. The harsh environment gave me and several other students post-traumatic stress disorder. The campus food is natorious for giving people food poisoning. If you are vegetarian or vegan prepare for a struggle. The city is culturally dead. The school owned apartments were shot up by automatic weapons twice at the beginning of the fall 2005 semester.
