Each of the fine art programs at Belhaven are amazing, with professors who are helpful, talented, and friendly, though the Christian focus, a plus for many, could be off-putting for some (who, for instance, want to learn to draw the human nude or wish to write romance novels). You should by no means come to the school, however, if you are even remotely interested in language acquisition or study abroad. There are but two years of Spanish and two years of French, whatever the website may say these days (2008), and there has been no consistent study abroad program for who knows how long. The administration, to top it all off, is not terribly open to student suggestions. Sports are well-funded but do not produce amazing teams; soccer is my personal favorite, and fun to watch, largely because most of the players are not American: the international student body is mostly made up of male soccer players (Ireland, Africa, South America) and girls from Seoul Women's University in South Korea. All in all, though, it's just a small school, which makes opportunities limited. Please, please be certain that this is the place for you before you come. The Worldview Curriculum, maligned by many students, is a wonderful opportunity for connecting the dots between history, art, literature, etc., but it is almost impossible to transfer those credits midway through the two years. If you come to Belhaven and decide to transfer, you are better off doing so as a junior. | Education Quality: A+, University Resource Use: F

There were a variety of circumstances that steered me to go to Belhaven. Most of the other students at my high school (of my academic caliber) went to "name" schools or large state universities with more resources.
I was a little uncomfortable with the idea of going to Belhaven before I attended, because the orientation more or less makes the school out to be a bunch of religious pod-people (sort of its market, you see).
The reality is, however, a bunch of peopel serious about their faith. Most are well-intentioned and usually conservative. The school pulls no punches about integrating Christian faith into the academic focus. Therein lies sorts of the decision about whether or not you really want to come to Belhaven or not.
Although business is the largest major, the arts and athletics dominate the social landscape, making for a rather fascinating dichotomy, although occasionally there is overlap. I have found Belhaven's academics to be up to par, especially within the English department (although I'm actually a creative writing major). I originally majored in history, which also had good teachers but I didn't feel my fellow students to be as vibrant there. | Education Quality: A+, Surrounding City: C-

I have been thankful for every day I've been at Belhaven. I will say that some of the professors, such as those in my department, are genuinely interested in helping motivated students succeed and grow intellectually, as well as spiritually and and an overall person. Often, I've seen professors and students eat lunch together and/or sit and have discussions with students. I myself have had great interactions, such as this, with the faculty. However, I have run across a teacher or two who, I think, are too easy and baby too much, but these are generally part-time, adjunct professors. Others, are well known on campus for being academically challenging, so it really depends on what classes you take (general, required stuff vs. advanced classes, such as genetics or physiological psychology).
The atmosphere here is very interesting, to say the least. Belhaven has a good reputation for it's art programs (art, dance, theater, creative writing, etc.), which means that there are A LOT of artistic types here. I've seen everything from mimes to guys in tights walking around at school, while I've only seen one little chemistry major floating around, thus far. =P The art people make this place interesting. There are plenty of other groups here (biology majors, business majors, psychology majors, etc.), but art definitely dominates.
Jackson, as a city, is not the safest of places and there really isn't a lot to do compared to other places. Crime is outrageous here. However, because of the college scenes in what is known as the "Fonderan" area in Jackson (Belhaven and Millsaps), there is a glimmer of hope. Fonderan has an artistic flare to it because of the college scene here. In regard to safety in Jackson, I feel fairly safe on campus. The campus is small (students generally know each other), the school is well lit at night, and campus security is all over the place. In addition, the campus has signs everywhere to notify everyone that they are under video survellance. In other words, don't let Jackson's bad reputation scare you off from what I think is a warm, family-like, interesting school. If you want a quality education and personal growth, you can find it at Belhaven. | Education Quality: A+, Surrounding City: D-
