I have read previous reviews about Jackson State University in this forum and everyone is entitled to their own perspective review. This is my experience, my first few years were littered with negative feedback from professors because I wasn't doing my part to get the best experience I could have and partly because they just weren’t very encouraging. Keep in mind, this is maybe two or three professors out of hundreds. But once I was motivated and joined the Physics department, my eyes were opened. I had a faculty and staff that cared about my development as a Physicist. They implant in you that you can create and achieve any goal/purpose that you want.
This department exposes many to great research as well as opportunities outside of the university. I personally have done research projects at UC Berkeley, Cornell University and Carnegie Mellon University. There were also many other opportunities to conduct research throughout industry (i.e. Northrop Grumman, Corning Inc.) and present them at conference throughout the country. These experiences are not known to many undergraduate students. You get the feeling that this research and experiences are about your personal development.
Students throughout the University are pretty friendly. You run into a lot of Southern Hospitality friendliness as well as student from all around the world. Majority of students are either from the Midwest and Southern states which makes for an interesting mix. A small but growing amount of students are coming from around the world, many are from African and Asian countries. Jackson State University does have a good bit to work on such as the friendliness of the financial aid/services department. The people in the community can be close-minded at sometimes, which is a setback for the university's success in competing with the nation’s prestigious universities. The president of the university would like to make the university graduate student friendly and bring in more college student social and shopping venues. Overall, this university is a great place for people to learn and become very competitive in your field of interest. | Education Quality: A+, Social Life: C

I really enjoyed my years at J-State. However, being perfectly honest, the courses were not even close to the level of difficulty at other schools. And I've attended a lot. For example, I hated English Comp and even withdrew twice at a nearby community college. But when I went to J-State, I easily made an A both semesters. An even better example is American Lit. I withdrew from it too after only a couple of weeks at a CC. But at J-State, I got 2 B's and honestly only went to the mall and read Cliff Notes, i.e. I never cracked the monster lit book. Biology over at MC in Clinton scared the hell out of me after 1 bro got an F and a second studied every weekend in the dorm and barely got a C. I told them I'm not crazy, I'll take that at J-State. First semester, I got a 148 out of 160 on the mid-term and the nearest score was 97. That was in a class of about 85. What's up with that. I'm no Einstein and only listened and crammed the night before. The prof told me the week before finals that I had an A and it wasn't necessary to take the final unless I wanted to. That's the honest to God truth. I really enjoyed every instructor I had. They were caring and when time permitted, shared their advice on my career goals. But being honest, I left J-State with a 3.83 gpa and a sheepskin. And this day I feel guilty because one homey at MC barely graduated in the same degree and the second one didn't get past his sophomore year. They were both a lot smarter than me. | Starting Job: sales, Preparedness: D+, Reputation: F

| | JSU has its problems like any HBCU but I stand by my alma mater because it helps student receive a higher education when they can't get into any other university due to low G.P.A. or ACT scores (those high school mistakes not realized until junior or senior year). Also kindness goes a long way at this university. Treat staff like you want to be treated. Though this does not hold true for all staff members the ones that are kind will the go the distance with you when you are in need. | Preparedness: -, Reputation: - | | | |
