Bozeman is a great place to live. There is so much to do here - in terms of outdoor recreation: hiking, climbing, biking, backpacking, kayaking, rafting, etc. If your into the club scene, be cautious. It's an outdoor town, no clubs. Fun bars, good restaurants, but no clubbing. People are in general laid back and friendly. Dress on campus is casual. Bikes and dogs are common. Car not necessary, free bus system (yet a bike is more than substantial transportation).
As for the actual school itself, its a pretty standard state university. Lots of clubs/organizations, variety of programs, some more prestigious than others.

When I chose to transfer to MSU, it was the friendly people and the laid back atmosphere that made my descision to leave my home state so easy. There is little ethnic diversity, but there are many states represtented in the student body which hopefully is expanding the minds of some of the more sheltered people who attend MSU. People who come here are hardcore into outdoor recreation, skiing, hiking, fishing and hunting are all acceptable excuses for missing a day or two of classes. If you like a relaxed atmosphere, small town environment and laid back (but definitely conservative) people, MSU is a great place to be.

Holy shit, this place is truly horrible. Listen carefully. This schools function is to educate the spawn of Montana, a sparsely populated state of ex-southerners who happen to be anti-gregarious, anti-intellectual, and super-conservative to the point of being frightening. You will mostly bump into the offspring of ranchers, farmers, or other modern-day cowboy and cowgirl types who seem to have absolutely nothing on their mind but their horses, alcohol, their trucks, their chewin tobacco, etc. Use your imagination to conjure up an image of a barely coherent redneck wonderland and you will see what MSU looks like. Diversity is non-existent here, and I don’t just mean in the student body. I am also referring to the variety of academic opinion or lack there of. Profs are detached, just happy to have gotten tenure in a resort town. To top all of this, a hefty amount of my classes have been taught by people who have only attained a masters degree and there not TA’s. Come to this place if you want to ski and you have been a poor student most of your life. If you care about your educational experience, your future, your sanity, don’t. All I have to say is, thank god for all of the students that come here from California. They really help the school seem a little more human, almost like a place of higher learning. Na…There’s not enough of them.

MSU seems to have very little regard for its students or student opinion. Expenditures on research now exceed expenditures on instruction. Its administrative structure is bloated with bureaucrats and petty-administrators that do little to facilitate the operation of the University, while driving up costs. University goals do not reflect student opinion. Funding is very unevenly distributed between departments.
